Arafat's widow: Armed struggle will only lead to Palestinians being crushed

The widow of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who launched a violent intifada against Israel in 2000, said Wednesday on the tenth anniversary of his death that further violence would only serve to hurt the Palestinian people.

"They said my husband was an obstacle to peace. We saw following his death what happened to peace," Suha Arafat said in an interview to Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

"Arafat did not want to see his Palestinian brothers fighting on the tenth anniversary of his death. My husband was the only one who succeeded in uniting the Palestinian factions," Suha, who now lives in Malta with her daughter, told the daily.

She said that her late husband would be sad to see the Palestinians divided like many others throughout the Arab world.
