Apartheid Indeed

Israel’s systematic domination of Gaza and racial discrimination against its own Palestinian citizens, besides rampant human rights abuses, certainly amount to apartheid — an institutionalised racial segregation of non-Jewish communities (“How many Nakbas?” July 25). Behind the veil of democracy, Israel is nothing but a coloniser. It is time the international community stood up to the colonist's oppression rather than merely keep a count of the Palestinian death toll.

S. Mohapatra, Kolkata

The world sympathised with Jews when they were persecuted as a race by Nazis decades ago. Many movies were made on the Holocaust, which brought tears to our eyes.

Sadly, the same sufferers are doing to Palestinians what the Nazis did to them. It is sad that the world watches silently and hardly acts.

Harbir Singh, Visakhapatnam

While all countries have been quick to condemn the shooting down of Flight MH17, not many have disapproved of Israel, which has been targeting people in even U.N. shelters. Clearly, nations do not want to annoy the Big Brother. Half-hearted attempts by the U.N. and some countries to broker peace on uneven terms have had no effect so far. Israel should be ostracised by nations that vouch for democracy, justice and human rights.

It's amazing that people can think this and more amazing that people here on this board would post it with implicit agreement.

11. What about those massive sanctions on North Korea?

Its political isolation from everyone except Beijing (and even that's very limited)?

We can definitely give Israel the north Korea treatment, if that's what you insist. Or we could give it the Syria treatment. Or the treatment we give nearly any other state you could come up with in this tired-ass "yeahbutwhatabout...!" argument. iran, perhaps, shall we treat Israel like we treat Iran?

You can list off any nation pulling wild shit, and ALL OF THEM are facing penalties for it. Turkey can't joi nthe EU because of Cyprus and its genocide denial. North Korea's under massive sanctions. iran, which has done nothing illegal, is also under sanctions. Syria, also sanctioned, and facing a western-trained insurgency-turned-caliphate made of cannibals and other creepy, creepy people. Sudan? More sanctions, and security forces placed to ensure the independence of South Sudan. About the only state that is "getting away with it" is Morocco and its occupation of Western Sahara - but Morocco isn't bombing the living fuck out of El Aaiún every time the King has political trouble, either.

So spare me this narrative of poor Israel getting "picked on" while every other human rights violator gets a "free pass." it's fiction, and it's such BAD fiction that even Stephanie Meyer would be ashamed of writing it.

And illegal missile sales, not imprisoning and murdering their citizens.

12. What about North Korea? I thought I was clear, no country. I don't

condone the loose use of rhetoric Nazi accusations thrown around. I will
add again, no government policy should be implemented that discriminates
against any one group, period. One needs to only review Israeli policy
toward the Palestinians to see how despicable they are, and the racist
statements made by Bibi's cabinet...some of which would induce one
to gasp when you read them.

Furthermore, when an Israeli human rights group has determined that
their government has adopted policies with the intention of harm, you're
in serious trouble.

The Israeli government has adopted an official policy of harming the innocent
Published:
23 Jun 2014

The intention to demolish the family home of the two Palestinians charged with the killing of Baruch Mizrahi means adopting an official policy of harming the innocent, stated Israeli human rights NGO B'Tselem. The two suspects will be tried for the attack, and are expected to be sentenced to long periods of detention. Their family members, who are not suspected of any offence, are the ones who will suffer the loss of their home: 13 people are currently living in the house, including 8 children.

Years ago, the army concluded that punitive home demolitions are not an effective measure to deter attacks against Israelis, and there are even indications that they achieve the opposite effect. It seems therefore that the motives are reaping revenge and politically capitalizing on the current public mood in Israel, in light of the abduction. This draconian measure was not utilized for almost ten years, except for one case in 2009:

5. Did the Nazis not brutalize and kill Jews without mind to the human cost of it all?
Fri Jul 25, 2014, 10:20 PM

Did it not drive Jews from their homes, isolate them from the world in open-air prisons, and victimize them as a matter of course? Did not germany point to orchestras and doctors as "proof" nothing was amiss when the Red Cross finally perked up about the situation?

The two are not identical, no. israel's not herding people into gas chambers, of course. But the Holocaust is embedded in the world psyche in a way that Nanking or Wounded Knee or Fallujah just isn't. That makes it a go-to point of comparison. Which if I recall, is sort of the entire point of remembering the holocaust. To look back at it and go, as per the phrase, never again.

That phrase sort of implies that it's important to try to nip this shit in the bud before the number gets really really fucking big, I think.

The Nazis did a lot of things: all pretty much heinous.

It shouldn't be considered Nazi or Jew inasmuch as human nature unchecked tends towards evil.

Welcome back. I'm sorry, but you just missed shira.

It's remarkable timing though, that she leaves right before you show up.

Perhaps you two will meet again.
