Hamas attack on Gaza Shiites may indicate its political shift

When they later recalled the siege by Hamas security forces, it was not its ferocity that astonished the residents of Beit Lahiya. It was the target - Shiite Muslims gathered in the building to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Mohammed's grandson.

Up to 100 policemen and masked men in civilian clothes stormed an apartment building in the Gaza enclave late on Saturday.

Minutes later, they emerged dragging 15 men, whom they then beat with truncheons and denounced as infidels. Neighbourhood residents drawn to the commotion said they were shocked.

"The police showed everyone black Shiite headbands and were yelling to the crowds, 'Look at these kafirs !'," said Yasser Ziada, 23. "It was like they were putting on a show for us, beating them in front of everyone. No questions - just beatings."

First the Saturday people, Then the Sunday people...Then everyone else who does not follow one particular set of precepts. How is Hamas different than the SS again?

1. How Civilized.

But you must remember that they are the Democratically eleced government.
Even if there is never another election, they will always be just that.

they won a majority of seats in the Palestinian parliament which made them part of the Palestinian government until 2007 when they staged a coup in Gaza, then they became a dictatorship. However even without that saying that they are the elected Palestinian government is a bit like saying that the Republicans are the elected US government

5. The Vanity Fair article did not say Hamas did not stage a coup

what Vanity Fair said was that Fatah was planning to do the same, but Hamas got there first

6. Don't really get where you are going with that

However even without that saying that they are the elected Palestinian government is a bit like saying that the Republicans are the elected US government

They are entitled to purge a religious minority because they were democratically elected or they are entitled to purge a religious minority because they are a dictatorship.

As for tihis

However even without that saying that they are the elected Palestinian government is a bit like saying that the Republicans are the elected US government

Well, no. Saying that they are the elected Palestinian government is more akin to saying that they control the House. Executive Branch and Judicial branch

2. Seems clear the ground is moving under Hamas.

Not at all clear where it's going though.
