European-funded Ma'an published Holocaust denial

On Jan. 30, 2012 PMW exposed that Ma'an, a European-funded independent Palestinian news service, published a vicious Antisemitic article. Three hours later, Ma'an removed the article and promised to reexamine their policy regarding their publishing of op-eds.

Despite this statement, the very next day Ma'an published a hateful article denying the Holocaust, presenting it as a Jewish lie used by Jews around the world to achieve various goals.

Published a few days after International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the article calls the Holocaust "a myth":

"The Zionists are marking the 68th anniversary
of the creation of the 'Holocaust' myth"

It further asserts "that there is no basis for what happened to the Jews in Germany and that they were cremated in gas chambers."

4. They should lose their funding Immediately and Retroactively.

Laws against Holocaust denial
Holocaust denial, the denial of the systematic genocidal killing of millions of Jews by Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, is illegal in a number of European countries. Many countries also have broader laws that criminalize genocide denial. Of the countries that ban Holocaust denial, a number (Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Romania) were among the perpetrators of the Holocaust, and many of these also ban other elements associated with Nazism, such as Nazi symbols.

We're talking about an EU that not only funds Ma'an antisemitism, but also allows Hezbollah to fundraise throughout Europe in their ongoing war against the Jewish State.

Norway questions funding of PA after Palestinian Media Watch findings

Recent findings by Palestinian Media Watch on the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) glorification of terrorism against Israel were featured in a news report by a television station in Norway, one of the countries contributing funds to the PA, renewing a debate in the Scandinavian country on that funding.

16. Norway disburses budget support to Palestine

“Norway is disbursing the whole amount of its budget support to Palestine for 2013 now because Palestinian public sector employees urgently need to be paid again,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide. Norway’s support is helping to provide education, health services and security to the Palestinian people. The budget support provided by Norway, which amounts to USD 43 million, will be used to build and run public institutions in Palestine. These funds are channelled through the World Bank, which ensures that they are used in accordance with the Palestinians’ own development and reform plans, as well as the World Bank’s strict requirements.
Norway chairs the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC), which brings together the main donors and coordinates support to the Palestinian Authority. The AHLC will meet again in the middle of March to discuss the financial difficulties that the Palestinians are facing. Donors, the Palestinians and the Israelis must cooperate on effective measures.

“Palestine cannot remain dependent on support from donors for ever. However, a sustainable Palestinian economy cannot be achieved unless progress is made in the political negotiations on ending the occupation and unless the Palestinians gain control of their own resources.

13. It turns out this is (largely) bullshit...

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/02/15/palestinians-need-to-learn-the-lesson-on-antisemitism.html

The two pieces that are referenced in this story were apparently blog posts. They were not written by Maan journalists, but instead by readers of the site, and posted to a readers' forum section of the Ma'an website.

Of course, they should not have been approved, and Maan probably need to do a better job of moderating readers' comments.

Secondly, it seems that Maan has been financially independent for at least three years now, so all the histrionics about taxpayers money being used to fund Maan can finally be put to bed.

17. From the article

Having said that, it’s important to note that in its response to al-Shami’s post, PMW omitted or failed to obtain some relevant facts, most importantly that the post appeared in a subsection of Ma’an’s opinion pages reserved for the reading audience—sort of a long-form letters-to-the-editor section—and was not written by anyone on staff at Ma’an. The employee who allowed the post to appear was, of course, on Ma’an’s staff, and anyone who oversees the publication of vicious Holocaust denial (whether glorified letter-to-the-editor or not) certainly deserves censure. Yet it’s an important distinction to make.

Furthermore, PMW suggests a kind of duplicity on Ma’an’s part by noting that al-Shami’s post “was posted on Ma'an's Arabic website and not on its English site,” without also clarifying (or, possibly, knowing) that none of Ma’an’s opinion pieces appear in English translation. There’s no case-by-case decision to keep certain material from English-reading eyes; opinion pieces are exclusively in Arabic.

Another thing PMW got wrong, according to Raed Othman, CEO of Ma’an Network (which includes Ma’an News Agency, as well as television, video, and radio production), is the question of Ma’an’s funding. The headline of the PMW post reads “European-funded Ma'an published Holocaust denial,” but Othman reports that while the network did once depend on foreign donations, it’s been self-sustaining for three years, and today the only outside support goes toward training courses for journalists and the like.

The Holocaust-denial piece was published by Ma'an News.
(The OP does not claim it was written by anyone on staff at Ma'an, just that they published it, which this article confirms)
It was only published on the Arabic version of the site.
(Also confirmed in this article)
And they do receive funding from European sources.
(Also confirmed by this article)

The article you linked to rightly condemns Ma'an for publishing this antisemiitic garbage (and for the previous example of same).

And they do receive funding from European sources.
(Also confirmed by this article)

That specifically was not confirmed by the article.

Othman said specifically that Ma'an was self-sufficient, apart from journalistic courses.

Ma'an still has extensive ties with Search for Common Ground, which in turn is funded by the UK Foreign Office as well as the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, but even so there would not be any funding link with Europe or the Europeans in general.

20. Norwegian minister admits Palestinian incitement funding

The Norwegian government appears to be one of the first European countries to be reconsidering its untargeted aid to the Palestinian territories on the basis of recent reports into incitement and anti-Semitism.

The issue, covered in depth by The Commentator, arises from the fact that Western governments give money often without conditions, to fund the budget of the Palestinian Authority. This has led to reported abuses of the cash, including the paying of terrorist salaries, rabid and frequent anti-Semitism and incitement in school textbooks, and the dedication of cultural events and organisations to known terrorists.

These examples have been shown in detail in the Palestinian Media Watch book, Deception. Speaking about the book on NRK TV, the government-owned news station, the Norwegian State Secretary Torgeir Larsen stated, "There are examples in the book (PMW's Deception) that clearly express hatred. There are also examples of Antisemitism, which you find in Palestinian society."

Though Larsen went on to state that the examples given may be 'part of an ongoing political battle', The Commentator has shown how even reports that try to conflate Israeli and Palestinian incitement fall short of drawing legitimate parallels between the two.

Currently, Norway gives around 300 million kroner a year ($52,628,700) to the Palestinian Authority, with a recent TV report stating: " children grow up learning that Jews are 'Satan with a tail'... Adults hear that Jews are evil and not to be trusted. It is perhaps not surprising that the hatred is growing. The messenger is a government that receives large amounts from Norway."

21. More Maan antisemitism (March 11, 2014)

Ma'an, an independent Palestinian news agency, has published a viciously Antisemitic article depicting Jews as the force of evil in the world, fulfilling their goals of world subjugation, according to the plan in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The article contends that Jews "are planning means to take over the reins of world politics, by spreading organized destruction throughout the countries." It blames the Jews for the French and Russian revolutions and well as other civil wars, initiated by Jews in order to weaken countries of the world, in order to rule over them. The Ma'an op-ed describes the Jewish tactic:

"The Jewish Masons have achieved their aims: They have gained world domination through their monopoly of the banking system, their control of the gold , natural and industrial resources, water and food, as well as by destroying the economies of countries that they remain under their control... They have succeeded in creating new states at the expense of stable ones, by partitioning and drawing new international borders, through armed military invasion, the theft of native lands and the expulsion of their residents - as in the case of Palestine and its residents."

From an article by Abd Al-Halim Abu Hajjaj,
Ma'an, independent Palestinian news agency,

Last edited Sat Mar 15, 2014, 04:20 PM - Edit history (1)

The kind of letter-to-the-editor "op-ed" pieces they publish simply isn't seen within the pages of respected, credible, mainstream news sources. I know of no such mainstream news sources that publish such horribly racist crap on their op-ed pages, do you?

No, didn't think so.

Not even Arutz-Sheva (worst that Israel has to offer) would do the equivalent of that vs. Muslims or Arabs. Maan is the best Palestinian news source comparatively speaking. There would be nothing in the letter-to-the-editor section @ Arutz-7 describing Muslims as "child rapists, incestuous, devil worshipping, genetically inferior, cannibals" or making calls for "genocide of Muslims".

Try again.

3 more article in the past hour.

Maybe we have to give Maan 100 more chances. Once they surpass 100 extremely vile, ugly op-eds and articles only then should we pause and consider...

Until then, Maan is perfectly kosher, anti-racist, liberal and progressive.
