Jewish groups support Rice for her staunch defense of Israel

Thursday, 06 December 2012 13:46 Ron Kampeas, JTA

WASHINGTON ó The very quality that helped get Susan Rice in hot water with some in Washington is what many pro-Israel groups have come to appreciate ó she is a vigorous and reliable defender of the Obama administrationís foreign policies.

Rice, the US ambassador to the UN who is widely seen as a leading candidate to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, has garnered plaudits from Jewish communal leaders over her defenses of Israel at the world body.

ďShe has proven herself as an ardent defender of major Israeli positions in an unfriendly forum,Ē said Abraham Foxman, the ADLís national director.

ďAnd Iím more comfortable with the person I know than the person I donít know. She is close to the president and thatís important in that position if you have someone you can relate to and understands us.Ē

If Obama nominates Rice, however, she would likely face opposition from Senate Republicans

1. "defense of Israel" = "knee-jerk opposition to Palestine"

No surprises there, I suppose.

2. do you support that performance of hers at the UN?

Not the basic concept of "defense of Israel"--I can already guess the answer to that--but rather, the content and approach of her statement?

3. I was never a fan,

She did what she was expected to do.

No more , no less and nothing exceptional. (my opinion )

4. I found it slightly exceptional, if for the wrong reasons

The staunch stance of defense was indeed expected and all the rest, business-as-usual to the degree that left me really baffled at the Republican opposition to her... but what stood out to me was the remarkable vacuity of the whole act. There was very little of a message there besides an extended soliloquy of "my way or the highway", with a comically exaggerated raised voice and aggressive approach. I suppose that was meant to convey a message of immutable strength, but it was really producing quite an opposite effect that was not lost on the intended audience. I'm not sure this demonstration of abject weakness is really one that should be warmly embraced, but then again I wouldn't expect any less from good ol' Abe.

5. Fair enough point

The US will have the same exact identical policy it's had for the last 50 years regardless of who has the position.
