Camera distribution project, huh? Good idea on B'Tselem's part.

"The Justice Ministry department that investigates police misconduct has improperly closed cases against dozens of policemen involved in violence against left-wing protesters in East Jerusalem, according to three appeals by a rights group over the last three months.
According to the appeals by the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, the department closed the probes without making even minimal efforts to investigate the allegations.
The appeals relate to three of the weekly demonstrations in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in 2010 and 2011. Following these demonstrations, held to protest Jewish settlement in the predominantly Arab neighborhood, 35 demonstrators submitted complaints alleging that they had been beaten by the police.
The complaints gave the names or descriptions of about 35 different policemen, along with medical records, videotapes of the demonstrations and the names of dozens of people who witnessed the alleged assaults. But all the cases were closed without charge due to "lack of evidence" a year to 18 months later, with the exception of one policeman who was put on disciplinary trial for assaulting an Israel Radio reporter."

(6,068 posts)BBC, the Guardian, the Times, the Independent, and a couple of Irish newspapers cover the story. Other than Huffpo, absolutely nothing in the US has gone near it.

CNN: Video shows Israeli police attacking Palestinian boy, rights group says

(6,068 posts)and I am glad that CNN qualified its headline so carefully:-
Jerusalem (CNN) -- A video released by an Israeli human rights organization shows what the group describes as a 9-year-old Palestinian boy being assaulted by two border police officers in the West Bank city of Hebron.
Its good to see that they didn't jump to the unwarranted conclusion that the border police actually kicked the boy (sorry, alleged boy). Best to leave those complicated issues of fact to the experts.

(2,927 posts)... videos and photos have we seen come along where the incident turns out to be completely false, staged to look like Israelis or just grossly misleading? If you like, I could put together a greatest hits.
I'm not saying that is what is happening here -- Israel is a country of humans and some humans are arseholes. But, ANY news agency with the slightest interest in appearing unbiased would automatically qualify any photographic "evidence" from the region, regardless of the source.

The Israeli Border Police have issued a statement denouncing the behavior of the policemen, which it claims contrasts the values of the force.
The statement reads: The Border Police commander instructed on setting up a team to investigate the incident immediately and its conclusions are due in the coming days."
After the incident, the boy, Abdul-Rahman Burqan, admitted to the Israeli police that the officers had chased him after he swore at one of them. However, he also claimed that, in a separate incident, an Israeli soldier had stomped on his hand after he and his friend were stopped at a checkpoint about a month ago.
