Opposition head will work with PM against Iran deal, won’t join gov’t

Opposition leader Isaac Herzog said Wednesday he would work with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition to thwart the Iran nuclear deal, in a rare show of cooperation.

Herzog met with Netanyahu late Tuesday for an update on the nuclear agreement, which has been roundly criticized by both, as well as by the cabinet.

“I had a meeting yesterday where I learned about the deal and I think it is bad for Israel. [Netanyahu and myself] will certainly cooperate when it comes to the security of Israel. As an Israeli patriot, this deal is dangerous,” Herzog told Israeli news site Walla.

...

Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid said Wednesday the Iran deal was the country’s biggest foreign policy failure ever. ... Lapid vowed to “continue fighting to the last minute so that the whole world and the US Congress understand that lifting sanctions without changing the issue of inspections would be wrong.”

So, even the 'moderates' in Israel want to interfere with the US government's political process and to start a war with Iran.

An Israeli politician says that they don't think sanctions ought to be lifted on Iran without a more vigorous inspections protocol and to you that equals wanting "to start a war with Iran".

FYI, from 2014:

Iran's Khamenei: Israel must be annihilated

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to Twitter to call for the destruction of Israel over the weekend. He first started with a string of vitriolic anti-Israel tweets that called for the destruction of the “barbaric, wolflike & infanticidal regime of Israel.”

2. Obama: It’s My Iran Deal or War

The Israelis don't want a deal of any kind. They want regime change in Iran. That's the only way one can guarantee a country with oil wealth and scientific infrastructure can't replicate technology that was developed over 70 years ago.

This isn't about inspections. Please.

The real problem for them isn't the nuclear thing, it's the fact that Iran is a regional rival who can use the $150 Billion in unfrozen assets, improved economic conditions, and newly-found mainstream diplomatic status to cause all kinds of headaches for Israel.

The Israelis would prefer that the sanctions continue indefinitely.

I think he will be able to have a productive discussion with Herzog. Obama has asked for those who have objections to the deal to discuss them in a reasonable way without allowing politics to enter into it. I think Herzog and Obama will have just such a conversation.

4. He's not going to have any conversation with Herzog.

Herzog doesn't get a vote, moreover he's committed to helping Netanyahu torpedo the deal.

So, Obama's not going to waste time on him.

The only people that matter are the Democrats he needs to sustain the veto.

The Israelis had their chance to provide their input, and they threw years-long temper tantrum instead.

5. Obama challenges critics of the Iran nuclear deal to offer alternatives

President Obama drew a line in the sand Wednesday challenging critics of his historic nuclear deal with Iran to offer alternatives instead of just shooting it down out of hand.

Thankfully, nothing that you've written is actually true.

Obama actually cares what people think of this deal, not just "the Democrats he needs to sustain the veto."

6. Yes, he's calling their bluff. He is NOT negotiating with them.

The negotiations are over. Now it's a matter of getting the deal approved.

The votes that matter for approval are in Washington, not Tel Aviv.

Since this is a political issue, he obviously has an interest in selling the deal to US voters.

The Israelis? lost cause.

9. The Iran deal isn't Israel's business, it only involves states that have signed the NPT.

If Israel stopped being a nuclear rogue state and signed the NPT, then of course Israel may have a say in what the deal should look like.
