Pamela Geller Turns Hollywood ShootingTragedy Into an Islamophobic Hate Fest
<snip>
"On Friday, there was a tragic incident in Hollywood, California. A man began shooting people randomly near the corner of Hollywood and Vine, and injured two men, one critically, before he was finally shot and killed by police. Pamela Geller had an article online right away titled HOLLYWOOD JIHAD: SHOOTOUT, GUNMAN CALMLY TARGETED DRIVERS AND PEOPLE WHILE SHOUTING ALLAHU AKBAR! She said in her lede “What is most disturbing about this story, apart from the obvious horror, is that not one news account reported what one witness said the shooter was screaming: “allahu akbar.” Not one news account. The media is the enemy.” The initial local news video about the incident did include one witness saying that the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar!” but at this point no other witness has confirmed that. Whether or not that one witness was accurate about what he thought he heard, no one yet knows, and none of the cell phone videos of the incident as it happened at this point confirm this allegatioin. Other witnesses said that they heard the shooter shout “Is this the end?” and “kill me” and “I’m gonna die” during the rampage. Witnesses also identified the shooter variously as “white” and as “hispanic”. Of course, as soon as Geller posted her story, the Islamophobic echo chamber reposted her story with their own sensational headlines. Geller’s partner Robert Spencer posted his own article referring to Geller. Sheikh Yermami called it “Hollywood Jihad”, Bare Naked Islam called it “Sudden Jihad Syndrome”. Debbie Schlussel called it a “terrorist attack”. Free Republic re-posted, Creeping Sharia re-posted. Even the Grant County Tea Party site re-posted Geller’s article. Gateway Pundit said “Once again the media hid the truth from the American public.” The Muslims are Terrorists site posted the headline Muslim goes on shooting spree in Hollywood! Shouts allah akbar, media omits that detail to protect jihadists! with the lede “Thankfully one less muslim is wandering the streets tonight!” http://theamericanmuslim.org/tam.php/features/articles/hollywood-shooting/0018902

Last edited Sun Dec 11, 2011, 09:53 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Every crime in America since 9 1 1,is attrributed to muslim,or muslim connected indiviuals,or groups.
In fact Muslin haters and Some Chrsitian supporters said Timothy J. McVeigh who was christian, had Muslim/Arab ties. Every christian member that commits attrocity,is disowned by the Chrsitan Israeli supporting right and called a Atheist or a Muslim supporter,or Terrorist,as Newt Gingrich just described Palestinians as, last night I think all these haters in America should hope and pray that there is no God,because if their is a god, they will have hell tp pay,and they will be in hell way before me |

2. Muslim is the new Commie, when the USSR evaporated, some new bete noir was needed.

The "terrorist" meme had been around since forever, and when combined with foreigners with a different religion and culture, it's off we go. I remember back in the nineties when the MIC leaders, the people who claim to be "defending" us, were trying to decide among cyber war, drug war, and war on terror as the substitute justification for the military budget. In the end, they chose all three, and still needed to start a half dozen small aggressive wars too.

10. Although, to be fair, I had no idea there were any Muslims involved in this
|
until I read about it here.
And I had read a few news stories about the killing - none mentioned the religion or ethnicity of the people involved. |

11. You are going to post Geller stuff, you are going to have that sort of issue.
|
To be fair, I didn't introduce islamophobia into the thread either, it's in the subject line.

12. Not sure I understand what you mean
|
My point is that this story about the man dressing as Santa and killing his family was widely reported in the media with no mention made of the religion or ethnicity of the people involved.

13. That's because those things are actually irrelevant.
|
But the OP is about Geller, who thinks it's the most important thing in the world, what your native religion and ethnicity are.

Last edited Sun Jan 1, 2012, 12:52 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) My point is that there was essentially no Islamophobia to be found with respect to this story outside of these fringe types.
When a criminal has a Jewish last name, there are similarly extreme people who go off about that as well. Why pay them any mind? |

16. Oh I quite agree.
|
At least as far as what they have to say. In the sense that little is accomplished by this thread, for example., though these things can be entertaining, sometimes. Or boring.
Politically, people who "feel strongly" about an issue are quite relevant, unfortunately, and I would not to forbid this sort of subject altogether, for that reason. One ought not ignore them, either. But on the other hand, one ought not mistake this sort of thing for real news, or a pragmatic point of view. And it's easy to overdo. And your point that the story was handled well outside the "fringe" is well taken. I noticed that too. |

Anti-Muslim Bloggers Invent Another ‘Honor Killing’
<snip> "The so-called “counter-jihad” bloggers are covering themselves in glory again, slobbering and ranting and trying to take advantage of a terrible crime to advance their un-American agenda. Same bigotry, different day. This time they’ve seized on a story about a man in Texas who killed six members of his own family on Christmas morning while dressed in a Santa suit, then committed suicide. The man’s wife had left him, his home had been foreclosed upon, his business was failing, and he had filed for bankruptcy; with anyone else, these things would be considered strong motives for committing this massacre. But because the man’s name was Aziz Yazdanpanah, and he was apparently unhappy about who his daughter was dating, these bloggers have decided it had to be an “Islamic honor killing.” And now they’re letting their bigotry run free again. Hate group leaders Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer are out in front, as always." http://www.islamophobiatoday.com/2011/12/29/anti-muslim-bloggers-invent-another-%E2%80%98honor-killing%E2%80%99/ |

This is someone who ran a blog that was called a "a vicious, anti-Muslim hate site" by the head of the Council of American Islamic Relations as recently as five years ago.

Me, I'm more than satisfied to consider him to be a self-centred wanker who's more than likely operating out of a hatred for Geller and Spencer than out of any real concern for Muslims and the bigotry aimed at them. But whatever his motivation, he's got it right in this case, wouldn't you agree?
