In Pakistan, detainees are vanishing in covert jails
AT Editor on July 26, 2015
(From Boston Globe)

Niaz Bibi’s son disappeared into the night, whisked away by Pakistani soldiers who accused him of being a Taliban fighter. For 18 anguishing months, she could find no word of his fate. Then she got a phone call.

“Come to Kohat prison,” said the man on the other end. “Tell nobody.”

At the prison, in northwestern Pakistan, she was directed to a separate, military-run internment center where her son, Asghar Muhammad, was brought to her. They touched hands through a metal grill, and she wept as he reassured her that he would be home soon.

But when the phone rang again, one month later, an official delivered the crushing news. “Your son is dead,” he said. “Come collect his body.”

not by mass executions, but by dragging them onto cars without license plates while the police just stand and stare, and later blame "terrorist kidnappers" or whatever; existing prisoners are shuffled around until they vanish sometime between jails and none of the actual jailers are the wiser; the interrogation rooms and cemeteries completely secret until someone trips over a thighbone or gets a UN grant *20 years later*; the funny thing about these military regimes, with guys in mirrorshades and bottlecaps and gold braid bellowing about the invincible defense of the eternal fatherland is that they never win any wars

incidentally this actually might explain why Bhutto said bin Laden was "dead" in '07--the way these regimes operate she knew he'd been "disappeared" and thus assumed he'd been executed, but we don't have to doubt a 2011 death (they'd never tell the SEALS they were executing a prisoner--just someone unarmed and surrendering; often it's the officers rather than the men)

"some sources" say that he was then hacked to bits and thrown out a helicopter by Americans (or whomever), which is exactly what seems to have happened to the American Father James Carney in Honduras (evidently they'd wanted him alive)
