If you are patient with dogs, this guy needs a home: Keenan, a bull mastiff (with issues)

** This is from Best Friends Animal Society, and I'm going to cross-post it in the Pets Group and the Lounge. Just FYI if you are able to adopt, or foster, or know someone who can. Please keep this kicked and/or distribute the information as you can.***

Poor Keenan! His life has been four years of miscommunication. And now only an angel – one who understands doggie language – can save him. He needs you before September 30! Could you be that angel?

Maybe Keenan was attacked by another dog as a young pup. Or maybe there was some other unpleasant experience.

Whatever the case, he’s now a big, strong, dashing Bullmastiff with issues – particularly when it comes to other pets or strangers. He tries to tell people through his dilated pupils, yawning, panting, pacing, lip licking, and other cues. But no one has yet to catch on before he feels the need to act.

The result? Three bite incidences during his life.

The family tried trainers, but they used coercive tools like prong and E collars. Those methods usually backfire on sensitive breeds like Bullmastiffs. Sure enough, they made Keenan’s problems worse.

8. I am not "trying to be cute"

I do a lot of work with rescue and rehab.

Unfortunately, things do not always work out the way we hope/plan. Even with what we see as "perfect" matches, bad things can happen.

A Mastiff with a history of biting, unpredictable traits, etc., is an invitation to disaster.

Hopefully, things will work out for this dog.

Maybe I should have explained myself in that first reply. I am trying to feel my way around this place and, evidently, I need to take a more roundabout approach.

If I offended you, I would like to apologize.

I hope that you will accept same.

9. Please see my reply to Cooley Hurd...

"Whatever the case, he’s now a big, strong, dashing Bullmastiff with issues – particularly when it comes to other pets or strangers. "The result? Three bite incidences during his life."

I am as good with Working Breeds as anyone I know, but there is no way I would adopt a dog with that resume'.

Maybe the dog could go to a ranch, or some property with wide-open spaces.

An out-of-control dog of that size is a nightmare that rarely goes away. Mastiff's are extraordinarily sensitive and, once in motion, are very difficult to contain.

10. I saw your response, and I thank you for whatever work you do with rescue.

That said, you're not as good as you think you are, subjectively proven by your last paragraph.

12. Huh?

What do you mean?

Have you ever dealt with a dog of that size/strength?

They will f##k you up in a heart-beat.

I would rather deal with a nervous quarterhorse than a crazy Mastiff.

Tell me, truly. How many Mastiffs have you handled?

Really.

Thanks.

14. Mouth, money

flvegan,

I have scrolled around this place for a while and have recently joined up.

I have always respected your thoughts, but this time you are full of it.

I am neck-deep in rescue:

http://www.petslifeline.org/

Also, I am into Big Cat rescue and conservation...

http://www.felidaefund.org/

We also conserve the largest (unfortunately) grouping of Weide (or "White") Rhino outside of S Africa at our ranch in Central Texas. I will not post a link, here.

I know animals.

If you wish to rescue this nightmare of a Mastiff, I will pay the air-fare.

Do you live on acreage?

I am serious.

Are you?

An un-hinged Mastiff is a living nightmare. They are as smart as a Crow and can fuck stuff up in less than a heartbeat.

Again, the challenge stands...

But I would rather be friends, and have you in one piece,
DollarBill

I apologize that real life and my rescue drew me away from your "challenge" but since I care little for links of what one has done I'd just rather save a dog. I try not to do pissing contests. It berates folks looking for rank amongst what they do against others on the same team. Quite stupid, loaded in ego and not helping animals.

So...airfare is on you, right? An "un-hinged mastiff" isn't a living nightmare, he or she is a dog, and the mastiff is far more forgiving than 80% of any animal sight unseen.

So yeah, pony up "I know animals" and deliver.

And for the record, I've taken in the worst and churned out the best. For having me in one piece, I've taken in dogs you'd never approach. Dogs you'd just ignore, without caution, or whimpered away from because they weren't convenient.

On edit: removed election cycle inappropriateness

You offered, challenged. I accepted. Live up to it.

DUDE.

I got $10 on "just another nobody"

Prove me wrong. Please. Let me know when that dog should get here, okay? I'd love to save him.

11. Best Friends is a reputable organization.

They won't place this dog (or any other) with somebody who isn't up to dealing with their behavioral challenges.

15. If someone on DU canhelp this critter, there are indeed transport groups

Like this one:

www.animalrescueflights.org

That help bring the animal to its new forever home.

And possibly a bunch of us could offer up some $$ to help make it happen as well.

Count me in with a PM if you need the contribution. (I think you have to get EarleG or Skinner's permission first for contributions)
