Feds may offer funding for Detroit light rail project

Federal officials weren’t talking details today, but the nation’s top transportation officials may bear gifts in the form of federal funding for the 3.3-mile light rail line that Detroit’s business leaders hope will spur redevelopment along Woodward Avenue from downtown to the New Center, when they visit the city Monday.
President Barack Obama’s Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood and Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff are scheduled to meet at Mayor Dave Bing’s office at 10:30 a.m. Monday along with Gov. Rick Snyder, Congressman John Dingell and key backers of the M-1 Rail project.
They’ll discuss a federal review of plans by some of the city’s top corporate and philanthropic chiefs to build a light rail line after Bing and Snyder rejected an earlier proposal for a longer version that would have extended north to 8 Mile as too costly and uncertain given Detroit’s deep financial troubles. ..................(more)
