Manhattan is Number One Extreme Commuting Destination

from Transportation Nation:

Manhattan is Number One Extreme Commuting Destination
By Andrea Bernstein | 03/22/2012

Manhattan is the top work destination in the country for so-called extreme commuting – work trips that are more than 90 miles in length each way. And the fastest growing commuter counties are in Northern New Jersey.

And they’re coming not only by air (map), but by bus, train, and car.

The number of employees commuting to Manhattan from Hudson County has increased by more than third over the past decade, according to data from the American Community survey. Passaic (22%) and Essex (24%) also experienced exponential growth.

“As housing costs have gone up, New Jersey has become a more attractive option for Manhattan workers,” said Michell Moss, director of New York University’s Rudin Center, which supplied the data to WNYC. ................(more)

1. None of the NJ counties mentioned in the snip would be extreme commuting by their definition

I would think you'd need to be out in Sussex or down in southern Ocean before it would be a 90 mile one way commute? Unfortunately the three times I've tried opening the link to read the full story my firefox has frozen.

3. Baltimore

I knew a lady that commuted to Manhattan from BALTIMORE. Long story, but she took the train back and forth. Yeah, there were days she didn't come home because she got out too late. And I think it contributed to her retirement decision.
