BP CEO Dudley committed to Gulf after spill

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2012/01/13/uk-bp-dudley-idUKTRE80C23L20120113

(Reuters) - BP (BP.L) learned expensive lessons from the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and has no intention of turning away from the region, the oil giant's CEO, Robert Dudley, said on Friday.

The Chicago native said the cleanup from the April 2010 disaster was down to its "final few miles" and the company has committed up to $1 billion (653.7 million pounds) to environmental restoration projects. It has disbursed roughly $8 billion of a $20 billion compensation fund.

Dudley would not specifically address the slew of lawsuits and federal citations against BP and other companies involved in the explosion and spill from the Deepwater Horizon rig, which killed 11 workers and spewed more than 4 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

But he said the company had learned valuable, if expensive, lessons.
