"It's happening faster than we had thought"

I could swear I've heard words to this effect before.

At the Edge of Disaster:
THE world is on the cusp of a "tipping point" into dangerous climate change, according to new data gathered by scientists measuring methane leaking from the Arctic permafrost and a report presented to the United Nations on Tuesday.

"The permafrost carbon feedback is irreversible on human time scales," says the report, Policy Implications of Warming Permafrost. "Overall, these observations indicate that large-scale thawing of permafrost may already have started."

---SNIP---

"I think it's fair to say that until recently climate scientists underrated the rate at which permafrost melt could release methane. I think we've been shown to be over-conservative. It's happening faster than we had thought ... This is not good news."

2. Nobody who's been paying attention here should be surprised.

Doha is proving to be useful for one thing - it's providing a global stage for the Bad News Bear(er)s.

I think more than ever that this is what's going to "scare the wits out of everyone" in AR5.

+6 to +8: here we come.

4. It's going to be the water.

Some water rising, but not enough to drink. That is when humans, as a group, will begin to giveadamn.

5. And since Oct. 2011 we now have 50 million new people on the planet. 2 new Californias.

Or several new Los Angeles and New Yorks.

THIS is the issue. Everything else is a symptom.

7. Too bad we can't cut our population fast enough to matter.

We won't cut our growth in population, production or consumption (especially of fossil fuels) voluntarily - it's not how we're built and/or programmed. Oh well. This is the true price of "progress". I hope we still feel it's been worth it in another 30 years.

13. Nature might cut it for us

I worry about some pandemic hitting, like the flu during wwI - and since I have kids, I don't like this idea. At all.

17. Nature will indeed cut it for us.

We're unfortunately going to have a chance to see all the Horsemen up close and personal, including what you're worried about. I'm deeply sorry, sad and grieving for the children.

6. Most definitely not good news. Sure is looking like Whitley Strieber's book, The Coming Global

Superstorms, was more prophetic than hyperbole.

Scary, very scary.

14. Do you want it in a nutshell, it isn't pretty, ...

A link that originated from Junkdrawer thru GG.

David Wasdell at the Talberg forum, 2008.
This is not for those who believe, the truth should not be told. It will enlighten you, to what humanity is facing. Feed back loops feeding back, exponential climate sensitivity, heat inertia feed back, and second order feed backs, it all paints a grim picture. It is a demonstrated concept from which, the reasonable hysteria of the OP, gains its credibility. Again, not for the faint of heart. It is all too real.
