http://www.businessinsider.com/photo-of-hong-kong-blanketed-in-the-worst-smog-ever-recorded-there-2012-8Hong Kong was recently covered in the worst smog ever recorded in the city. It was so bad that residents were warned to stay indoors, reports Asia One.
"This is the worst air pollution reading we've seen since Hong Kong started recording air pollution in 1999, except for the dust storm," said environmental protection department spokesman Y.F. Chau, according to Asia One. The natural dust storm he's referring to had hit the city two years ago.
Officials said the smog was so bad because of the conditions caused by Typhoon Saola, which had just hit Taiwan.

(39,367 posts)I lived there in the 70's when Mao had just died. It was always one of the most crowded places on earth, but paradise was never very far away, be it on the south side of the island, the New Territories or one of the outlying islands.
The changes in China have had a brutal effect; on one of my return trips I saw a computer monitor bobbing in the waters of Deep Water Bay, which used to be almost idyllic. The air quality is awful more days than not. Too bad, because it's still one of the most interesting and varied places on earth, to me at least. You can be in Central one moment, which is akin to midtown Manhattan, and in well under an hour, standing on a tropical beach like Shek O that feels like remote southeast Asia.

Who said anything about preventing. If anything, the right-wingers feel that it is man's god-given right to destroy the environment.
Don't worry, Jesus will come back and scrub the atmosphere clean. Won't be too long now...
