Related: About this forumEndangered Species Condoms
The Center for Biological Diversity will mark this years Earth Day by distributing 100,000 free Endangered Species Condoms around the country. The Center collaborated with artist Roger Peet to create a special edition of the colorful condom packages featuring a suite of species from the dwarf seahorse to the polar bear threatened by the worlds growing human population.
The Earths population has nearly doubled since the original Earth Day in 1970. In those days, it was well understood that human overpopulation was causing the many environmental challenges cropping up around the world. Now, even having passed the 7 billion milestone, the human population explosion is too often ignored while it continues to drive all the major environmental problems that plague our planet.
The beautifully designed packages, featuring clever slogans, have been distributed by a network of volunteers around the country since 2009. The condoms are handed out at concerts, bars, universities, spiritual groups, local events, and farmers markets. Along with two condoms, each package contains original artwork and information on the species, facts about overpopulation and the extinction crisis, and suggestions on how the human population can be stabilized.
To help ensure a world that is livable for other species and healthy and prosperous for us practice responsible reproduction and learn more about the Centers campaign to address overpopulation.

(26,693 posts)2. Not as well thought out as it could be.
Somehow I just don't think the dwarf seahorse model is going to appeal to the average male.

Some of us sit on the left hand side of the bell curve, and dwarf seahorse has kind of a nice ring to it.

(12,022 posts)3. I like it.
I signed up with them a couple months ago. But I don't go to good places to leave them, so I haven't had them send me any. I really just want to give them to my most fecund neighbors, and hand some to the in-laws who've pressured me for years to have a baby. I don't think that's enough of a plan for them to send me a whole box.
I am going to a couple of concerts later this year so maybe I should sign up again. I've been getting their emails.

(6,276 posts)4. I don't think members of endangered species should use birth control...
Oh wait, that's not what this is about?

Surely they should be aiming their product at people who currently *don't* want
to give a f*ck about the environment?
