How Gloria Romero (D-CA Ed Deformer) Became the Face of Proposition 32Last edited Mon Oct 8, 2012, 11:38 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
You might not know if you aren't in CA, but we're currently fighting a WI-type bill that attacks unions' ability to collect funds for political campaigns called Prop 32. I've been posting about it over in the CA group, but this article shows just how low some are willing to go to gore their favorite ox--teachers' unions.
http://fryingpannews.org/2012/10/05/how-gloria-romero-became-the-face-of-proposition-32/ “Money is the mother’s milk of politics,” Gloria Romero tells me on the phone. “It’s flowing to both sides. Government isn’t about drawing lines. It’s not about saying you’re on that side and you can’t come over.” Her voice is friendly, somewhat placid, but it’s clear Romero is not thrilled with having to answer questions about her political alliance with the Koch brothers and other wealthy supporters of Proposition 32, and she conspicuously avoids bringing up their names. When pressed about the Kochs and the money behind behind Prop. 32, she falls back upon her experience in Sacramento. <snip> With Election Day still one month away, the battle to pass Prop. 32 has seen its share of political shockers, including the sudden injection of $4 million of Koch brother money to the Yes on 32 campaign, along with millions more from Charles Munger Jr. But nothing has been more surprising than the decision of Romero, a former California State Senate Democratic majority leader, to serve as the measure’s frontwoman. <snip> {Diane} Ravitch says Prop. 32 shares much in common with the Parent Trigger. “I would see Prop. 32 in the context of the privatization movement. They want to kill off the unions because they are the guardians of public education.”

1. Measures like 32 are so insulting.

Instead of attacking teachers and other public workers, why do none of these union bashers try to work with us? Their entire agenda appears to be focused on bashing teachers and their unions while teachers are focusing on what's best for kids.

2. Romero is an odd case too.

She *was* on our side the last time we had a bill like this in CA. Then...DFER and ed reform up the wazoo from her. Kickbacks? Consultant fees? She's been a player in state politics for awhile, so it isn't like she's unaware of the structural problems here.
