... all of it at school. It was supposed to be homework, however.

My elementary school years were mostly a waste academically because the teachers weren't very good.

I had a teacher confiscate a coin from New Zealand that I was showing to another student at recess as punishment for me "lying" about it being real money! I was only in first grade, yet I knew even then that various types of coins existed in the world. A third-grade teacher confidently told us that the sky was blue because it reflected the color of the oceans! I knew that she was an idiot too.

Thank goodness that my junior high and high school teachers were smart and competent. I started to enjoy school at about that time as well.

3. There has to to be a balance

but no way someone becomes proficient in writing or mathematics during the time allotted in class. I would be a fan of flipped lectures at the high school level though. The students watch the lecture on the subject before class, and the class period is taken up with applying the information provided in the lecture (ie homework, class projects etc).
