Is Quickbooks Pro 2012 crap?

I'm still using an old version and have no real issues. I don't use it for Payroll or credit cards, just basic bookkeeping. However, my laptop is dying and I'm considering using a different laptop for work. I keep thinking of upgrading to 2012 but when I read the reviews, it gets horrible comments from people who've upgraded. The major complaint is that Intuit has it filled with spam to get you to use other services. People say the new software is slow and has caused computer problems for them. Some say you can't save and email pdf files anymore. (?) Many had compatibility issues when trying to use information from the previous version.

Cronkite, can you advise? Anyone else using it? Anyone using something else they would recommend?

1. Good question.

I'm using Pro 2010 and am also switching over (very slowly) to a new laptop.

I typically upgrade my QB every 3 years and the last one was REALLY worth it, so I've thought about making the change as I switch machines.

From your synapsis of the reviews/user comments, it seems I should wait for 2013. I cannot afford additional headaches right now, LOL!

2. Thanks. I think one trick may be

making sure I don't install auto updates or other parts of the program I don't need. I'm going to load it on the desktop in a few hours.

4. I advise you to do that.

I don't have mine set to auto-update. I have had bad experiences so I usually wit a while and make sure other people aren't having problems before I do any updating.

3. Sure;

First thing to remember is people that have problems tend to complain (about any product) whereas those that don't generally don't bother with reviews.

The "spam" problem is easy enough to correct. You just edit the preferences to "hide all offers" and they are gone. Intuit has always had these "helpful messages"..........

One issue I HAVE heard about is the "New feature" pop up for the "add multiple items list". It has been resolved by either turning off the windows user control or re-installing QuickBooks. (PITA).

I have seen reports of the PDF issue, I haven't had a problem myself but others have. I am sure there will be a fix soon.

The people complaining about speed most likely have either a very large data file with low system resources or have other resource hungry applications running. Once a file gets to be over 500mb it starts to slow down. Just hit F2 and you can check the file size.

Data compatibility issues can be a problem for people upgrading from any version from 2005 back. They used a different database structure back then and the fix is to upgrade to any year from (2006-2008), and then upgrade to the current year.

What I like about 2012- It has a great "file condense" feature that replaced to previous method of shrinking files. You can have it create monthly journal entries for previous periods and it does wonders for large files. I also like the "lead center" and inventory center.

Would I upgrade? I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade, Amazon has it on sale for 135 dollars and of course if it doesn't work out you can return it to either Amazon or Intuit for 60 days after purchase. I am running Enterprise 2012 for my own business and have a copy of 2012 premier and haven't had any issues.

I think the key is what your current version is and if it's working for you. I have seen people still running versions from the 90's without any trouble.

5. Thanks! The only trouble I had updating was

the desktop needed some Microsoft updates and I had to download a Quickbooks utility something or other to be able to install the new program.

I could not remember the admin log in from the original version. In order to restore the company file, the program needed it. I was thinking "What if died? They'd never be able to open this again?" And the only advice was to contact my administrator --- which is me.

I had written down the username and password but nothing worked. I had to go home and get the old laptop and see if could tell from there. The username there was different from what I had written down but the password was the same. I had used that password for years! So once I got the username, everything worked out fine.

I haven't used it enough yet to tell what the differences are.

Thanks for your info!

6. Please keep us posted on your opinion.

I'll need to make the decision by June 30 and your experience can sway me.

7. Other than installing, no issues so far...

still does the reports I need. Has a calendar where due dates for bills appear and a better view of the overall picture. There's a history bar so you can see what you've been doing, lol.

I think it's safe but I don't use any of the add-on features.

Are you starting over or upgrading from an old version?

8. It would be an upgrade

from Pro 2010. My year-end is 6/30 and the shiny new laptap wants to get into the action on 7/1 as this one badly NEEDS to retire.

I don't use any add-on features either. I have not seen any that would be helpful to me.

Have you done a bank rec yet? That is the one thing that was improved in 2010 over 2007 but there is rom for so much more improvement. I deal with a gazillion bank trx and would love to be able to "undo" one side without undoing the other(!!!).

I have always wished that Intuit would be way more specific in promoting precisely what features are added/improved in new versions.

LOL! The history bar might indeed be helpful!

9. I can't believe you don't like clicking all the little checkmarks!

just to undo!

I have not done a bank rec but I will check it for you. The credit card rec was exactly the same.

11. OK I looked at it...

the only thing I see is highlighting. Otherwise it's all or nothing.

12. Thanks, Phentex.

Bummer.

I have to say that I was a user of pre-highlighting versions.

That's what happened to the eyes in my avatar.

just now as I was unclicking 116 bank debits to find a tiny error while trying to reconcile in my new QBP 2013.
