The City of Bellevue continues to make progress in scaling back its policy of unlimited banking of vacation time, but not without financial pains.

Bellevue has made more than $400,000 in vacation payouts — about $150,000 more than it anticipated this budget year — as part of the city's push to whittle down employees' saved-up vacation.

Nearly half of that money went to former Police Chief John Stacey, who received more than $196,000 for unused vacation time when he resigned amid controversy.

Two members of Stacey's command staff, Capt. Herb Evers and Lt. Ed Monnier, also retired recently, increasing the city's payouts.

1. As a benchmark, Federal employees are allowed to bank

only 240 hours.

2. I don't remember how much but my dad had to take vacation

every once in a while to use up his bank hours. That was before 1996 when he retired.

3. For Feds its 240 hours carry over at the end of the calendar year

leave in excess of that is called "use or lose". You can get exceptions to carry more over, but it is a hassle.

4. Was that before 1996?

Like I stated he had to use vacation every once in a while to get it back down. It's been 40 years since I last lived at home with my parents and would know first hand when he did not go to work. So really I should ask for 1972 or before instead of 1996 when he retired.
