Romney Regrets Unions Prevent Deep Cuts in Federal Workforce

Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney suggested he would reduce the federal government workforce if he wins the election and voiced regret that union protections would prevent him from cutting more deeply, in remarks at a secretly taped fundraising event.
Romney said: I wish we werent unionized so we could go a lot deeper than youre actually allowed to go.
When you hear comments like this, the next question you have to ask is: Where do you start? said Cory Bythrow, spokesman for the National Federation of Federal Employees, which represents about 110,000 workers. Do you want to reduce the number of food safety inspectors? The number of border patrol agents on our border, who are stopping human trafficking? Reduce air traffic controllers, who are keeping the skies safe? Once you get into specifics, youre talking about services that really matter to the American people.

(785 posts)The whole idea of "UNION" has been with us from the Foundation of our Country and was reinforced during and after the Civil War. The "Northern States" were call the "Union". It's the basis of the "free association" clause in our Constitution. I guess the Republicans really do hate America.

I'm doing this by memory, but the story goes something like this. Ben Franklin took an arrow and broke it easily in front of those about to release the Declaration of Independence. Then he put 13 arrows together and invited anyone to try to break the combined arrows. Some tried but they all failed. That's how he illustrated the need to "hand together". Our Founders saw the wisdom of his illustration and we all need to remember it now, because the lesson still remains true. The GOP meme that "everybody is on their own" simply doesn't work, in war or peace.
