This November, will you be voting to censor consenting adult porn?

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/28/755201/gop-platform-calls-for-prosecutors-to-vigorously-target-porn

Or will you be voting for Obama?

2. Feel free to repost in GD, if you're up for it.

I'll weigh in, but right now I simply don't have the energy to do it myself.

3. Oh god, no....

I can only imagine the outrage from the few (do you think they even watch the convention?), and tonight is not the night.

4. Not to pick at nits

but from the article it says they've vowed to enforce existing laws more vigorously.

I'm not sure what all that entails but since most porn is perfectly legal I don't really see a problem here.

Also this:

Could come from any rad-fem site.

5. They don't think it is. They'd like to see broad obscenity prosecutions for anything "hardcore"

for instance, hardcore meaning an actual visual depiction of screwing.

7. Perhaps but the quote said existing laws

If that's all there is to it I don't see any real issue here.

If they try to add to existing laws I will oppose them (depending on the law I guess).

8. The argument is that existing laws, "properly" enforced, would allow censoring of pictures of nudity

and fucking. That's the argument.

Where the money is going to come from to pay for all the naked boob internet cops, I don't know. Probably the same place that will pay for all the abortion and birth control police.

9. I don't think existing laws allow for that

not without a radical reinterpretation of the constitutions.

10. It ties into the definition of "obscenity" and "community standards"

11. The article says it was shut down

so that wouldn't count as an existing law.

12. Right, it depends on the interpretation of the current law.

It was activated AND shut down without any changes to the law. Again, it depends on the interpretation, and how vigorously, say, the justice department is going to get into trying to find juries, etc. that will go along with these interpretations, again, of "obscenity" and "community standards".

Part of the issue, again, is that "obscenity" (like porn, as per P. Stewart) is in the eye of the beholder, and "community standards" are a shifting sand dune.

What the GOP platform is saying is that if elected, they will (as Bush did) make this a priority at the DOJ. Frankly, I think my tax dollars have better things to do than go after consenting adults for fucking on film.

14. I think in the interest of fiscal responsibility

they ought to explain how much all these masturbation and birth control cops are going to cost the taxpayers.
