Venezuela wins a seat on UN Human Rights Council

At a United Nations (UN) General Assembly Election held on Monday 12 November, Venezuela managed to win a seat on the organization’s Human Rights Council for the period 2013-2015.

With 154 votes, the country nabbed the third and last seat assigned to the Latin America and Caribbean region. Other countries that will take part in this international forum for the discussion of Human Rights entrenchment are: Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Korea, Cote d’Ivoire, United Arab Emirates, Estonia, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Montenegro, Pakistan, Sierra Leona and the United States.

The win enticed expression of both joy and outright indignation among this nation’s social and political leaders.

Venezuela’s ambassador to the UN, Jorge Valero, said this victory ratified President Hugo Chavez’s government as a ‘social paradigm around the world’. The diplomat pointed out that Venezuela had the best social indicators in the region and therefore had the ‘a lot to teach and transmit’ to other nations on the topics of social and economic rights.
