Paraguayan Police Accused of Forced Disappearance of Campesinos

Paraguayan Police Accused of Forced Disappearance of Campesinos
Published 14 September 2016

In Paraguay, an estimated 80 percent of the land is in the hands of only 2 percent of the population, one of the worst rates in the region.

Paraguay's main campesino organization said Wednesday that its members are victims of increasing state violence, including forced disappearances at the hands of police, for defending their "right to land, national sovereignty and a healthy environment."

In the settlement of San Juan, in the department of Canindeyú —where the infamous massacre of Curuguaty occurred in 2012 during a police clash with campesinos—“police forces arrest people, make people disappear, or arbitrarily shot members of the community, which includes men, women, children, and seniors,” said the National Campesina Federation, or FNC, in a statement.

On Thursday, a 25-year-old campesino and father of two who is legally entitled to the agrarian reform, was shot in the gut when he tried to keep Brazilian soy producers from destroying by way of fumigation the crops that the campesinos had recovered after occupation.
