During a five day conference in Mexico, regional leftist leaders discussed inequality and measures to halt the advances of the conservative right.
Regional leaders, academics and policy makers convened in Mexico to attend the Second International Conference of the Democratic Left, where participants addressed various issues including climate change, inequality and the resurgence of conservative forces throughout the region.
We must be alert, so that the conservative right does not continue to advance in the South America and throughout the region. We have to take measures and political actions so that the left continues to grow in a relevant way, said Jesus Ortega, former president of the Mexican Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).
The event, which ended on Friday, was also attended by various figures including Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera, former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica along with the Ecuadorean Ambassador to Mexico Leonardo Arizaga.
During the conference, the Ecuadorean ambassador said that the purpose of the left should center around the promotion of inclusive development and wealth distribution.
