Bolivia's parliament passed a law on Saturday that would allow President Evo Morales to run for another term if ratified in a national referendum next year.
The law, approved in a marathon overnight session by more than two-thirds of lawmakers, would amend the constitution in order to eliminate presidential term limits.
"It's not about being forever," Morales told reporters in New York, where he is attending the annual U.N. General Assembly.
Morales, who came to power in 2006 and whose approval rating is above 60 percent, argues he would happily give up office but says his supporters are pushing for him to stay.

Seems amending constitutions to allow incumbent presidents to run for additional terms is a thing in Latin America these days (with Colombia being an exception).
Guess it's hard to give up that power.

(160,515 posts)There has been NO Bolivian President who has done so much for ALL the country, rather than just the fascist white sector which has ruled the country like true murdering, torturing a$$holes all this time.
As soon as I heard about this decision earlier today, the first thing I thought was, "So now their next move is to get even more serious about assassinating him." Morales is definitely not doing this for his heath.
Filthy right-wingers don't seem capable of grasping the seriousness involved when a leftist runs for office in the Americas. You have to chalk it up to profound stupidity, and hatred.

MEMBERS of Bolivias legislative assembly voted overwhelmingly at the weekend to approve a constitutional amendment that would allow President Evo Morales to seek a fourth term in 2020.
The measure was backed by a 112-41 vote and will now be submitted to voters in a national referendum in February 2016.
Mr Morales is Bolivias first indigenous president and he won his current six-year term last year with 60 per cent of the votes.
Global prices for natural gas and minerals, Bolivias major exports, have fallen recently causing some economic problems, but the president continues to enjoy popularity ratings of about 70 per cent.
