Congress Criticizes Statements of Peru''s Ex President Alan Garcia PDF Imprimir E-Mail
Lima, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The Peruvian President Alan Garcia today is widely criticized after having denyed to meet privately with an alleged intermediary of bribery of Brazilian companies and having defended the pardons granted to over 800 drug traffickers.
The former president of a parliamentary commission investigating possible corruption cases of Garcia's last government (2006-11), Sergio Tejada, said that statements made at a press website show that the former leader is uneasy.
The unrest -said Tejada- is due to the advance of Brazilian investigations on bribes from Brazilian construction companies to Peruvian officials. These investigations will soon reveal the names of those bribed and new findings will come to light.
Narco-pardons are subject to trial of a group of former officials, in which the chairman of the committee of presidential pardons Miguel Facundo Chinguel -close to Garcia-, risks a 17-year sentence for allegedly taking bribes to include traffickers among those pardoned.
In this regard, Garcia tacitly admitted the possibility of bribes, saying that he believes that anyone in lower courts could arrange commutations.
