Eight former Martinelli cabinet ministers have now been arrested or are under investigation for embezzlement and corruption charges.
Panamanian officials arrested ex-government official Emilio Kieswatter in connection with corruption charges dating back to his one-year term as Agricultural Planning Minister under the former president Ricardo Martinelli.
Kieswatter, who was arrested Tuesday in the southwest province of Chiriqui, will be taken to the Panamanian capital for questioning by authorities, an anonymous source with the Panamanian Ministry of Public Information told EFE news agency.
Kieswetter resigned in 2011 amid a corruption scandal involving a US$37.4m contract for a planned irrigation system. Although a payment was issued for the project, no work ever took place.
