Kesicki: U.S. fails 'informed and just' litmus test in Central America

Jesuit priest brutally slain in 1989 had asked America to pursue an 'informed and just' foreign policy. It didn't.

By Rev. Timothy P. Kesicki | November 14, 2014

This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most glaring and brazen human rights crimes in recent memory: the slaughter of six priests, their housekeeper and her daughter at the Jesuits' University of Central America - the UCA - in El Salvador.

The massacre of eight innocents had a profound impact, but how lasting that impact is must be said to be up for debate given the continuing failures of U.S. policy toward Central America.

While the murders were shockingly depraved - the killers kicked in the skulls of the dead priests to expose their brains - they were no surprise. El Salvador had been engaged in a brutal civil war, and the Salvadoran forces had been inculpated in the assassinations of Archbishop Oscar Romero, four American missionary women and thousands of Salvadorans.

The Jesuits were outspoken government critics and champions for peace, social justice and the poor. Their rector, Father Ignacio Ellacuria, had written: "The social and political destiny of El Salvador, whether we like it or not, depends to a large extent on the United States government." "It is therefore," he added, "of the utmost importance that the United States carry out a foreign policy in Central America which is both informed and just."

Salvador and the rest of Central America are so bad that kids there are fleeing to the US.
