According to estimates by Marcos Tarre Briceño, a security expert, and agents of the Penal and Criminology Investigative Police Agency (Cicpc), there are 18,000 criminal gangs in Venezuela.
Tarre Briceño conducted a thorough research and estimated that between 10,000 and 12,000 criminal gangs are linked to violent crime. "Violent crimes are defined as those that threaten the physical integrity of the victims: armed robbery, kidnapping, murders ... The rest are related to non-violent crimes such as fraud, electronic crimes, thefts," the expert listed.
A criminal gang is defined as a group of more than three people living outside the law and organized to commit any type of crime. However, according to some Cicpc officers, none of these groups have only three thugs, because they have an average of 10 crooks. On this basis, it is estimated that there are about 180,000 criminals in Venezuela.
Half of the gangs are focused on Caracas and most of them are related to the sale of drugs, kidnappings, armed robbery, car theft contract killing, bank robbery, thefts to people who leave banks with money, and above all express kidnapping, a crime that has greatly increased.
