Sanders backers worry that Clinton will clinch nomination before California’s polls close

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/05/31/sanders-backers-worry-that-clinton-will-clinch-nomination-before-californias-polls-close/

EMERYVILLE, Calif. — With just one week to go before this state's primary, supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders are starting to ask whether media coverage will skew results by declaring Hillary Clinton the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.

"Here's what's really bad," said RoseAnn DeMoro, the executive director of the pro-Sanders union National Nurses United, after the candidate held an event with its members. "At 5 o'clock, evidently, there's this plan for the media, if Clinton wins New Jersey, to say: 'This is over. She's got it locked up.' That's a lie. That's a lie."

"It's a lie," a nurse in the audience said loudly.

[Clinton decisively wins Democratic primaries in 4 states]

DeMoro was referring to not-so-secret plans for media outlets, which have been keeping their own delegate counts, to mark the moment when Clinton wins the 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. The Associated Press's count, the basis for many other media outlets, has Clinton at 2,312 — 1,769 won in primaries and 543 superdelegates. There are 12 delegates up for grabs in the U.S. Virgin Islands on June 4, and 67 more in Puerto Rico the next day. At her current pace, Clinton would hit the 2,383 target on June 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern time, when polls close in New Jersey and the state's 142 delegates are parceled out.

"This is what I call trouble, what I'm about to start here," Chris Matthews said on MSNBC last week. "At 8 o'clock that night, Eastern time, the networks — including this one — will be prepared to declare that Hillary has won.

I thought that it was illegal for the candidate to coordinate with the candidate. Or maybe those rules don't apply.

We need to change the laws of mathematics so that 1,545 delegates is greater than 2,291 delegates.

She won't really have all those delegates because...time zone math or something.

However, it does look like Clinton will clinch the nom either when New Jersey closes, or possibly even before it opens when she wins VI and PR, and some supers declare.

It's a massive conspiracy between the bigwigs of all the media companies and the on air talent. They all must get together in a SOHO bar and discuss how exactly to pull this off at just the right time to do the most damage to Sanders campaign.

Morons abound.

She needs 71 delegates to clinch. (Bernie, by comparison, needs 838 delegates to clinch.)

The Virgin Islands has 7 pledged delegates and 2 unclaimed SD. (http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P16/VI-D)

Puerto Rico has 60 pledged delegates and 3 unclaimed SD. (http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P16/PR-D)

To clinch this weekend she has to sweep both states AND take all the unclaimed SD. As much as I'd like to see it happen, there's no way it will.

Locking it up when NJ reports is fine by me.

when they know that SDs will switch if the candidate is winning by other measures (like they did in 2008). How on earth can you justify flipping all the SDs when you're losing by every. single. measure? It blows my mind.
