Manhattan, KS: Democrats strategize at campaign academy

MANHATTAN — Topeka resident Kaelyn Seymour, field and training director for the Kansas Democratic Party, believes the “biggest blessing and curse” for Democrats in this year’s state and national elections is the infighting among Republicans as they attempt to “figure out if they’re moderates or conservatives.”

One of the goals of the Democratic Party, she said, is to bolster its own ranks while gaining moderate Republican votes.

“We want to bridge that gap that the Republican Party has given us and that we didn’t ask for,” she said.

Seymour was among the presenters Saturday and Sunday at the Democracy for America Campaign Academy in Manhattan. About 72 people from Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri attended the academy, which was co-sponsored by the Kansas Young Democrats and the Kansas Democratic Party.
