Taking a Closer Look at an Odd Pair of Very, Very Old Socks

I can’t stop staring at these socks. A pair of very, very old socks made in Egypt sometime between A.D. 250 and A.D. 420.

We don’t know for sure whether these socks were for everyday use, worn with a pair of sandals to do the ancient Egyptian equivalent of running errands or heading to work—or if they were used as ceremonial offerings to the dead (they were found by burial grounds, after all). I prefer to imagine an #ancientalien pulling them on to protect its E.T.-like feet from the extraterrestrial elements.

1. Um, ok.....

I need a pair of socks to wear with my flip-flops. Those ought to work. But they look a little big.

Any Egyptian gods with feet like that???

2. Flip flops would work well with those socks the thong/tong is in the right place, lol..

You may have just discovered a marketable product. Think of all those old men who wear black socks with sandals, lol. These may be right up their alley.

I wonder what those socks were really for. They don't look old enough to belong to any Egyptian. I think that museum is
rick-rolling people.

edit to add: I couldn't make up my mind between thong/tong.

3. Well, we always called them thongs....

but that was before there were "thongs". If you noticed, I was careful to use the term "flip-flops". Hate to get people confused!

I also thought that those socks were in pretty good shape for being ancient. Oh well, maybe it is one of those "they don't make em like they used to" things.

4. Just like Japanese Tabi

They still wear these today in Japan.
And Flip-flops are based on zori, Japanese shoes that go with tabi.

6. Yep--they make 'em in plain wool or "sweat sox" material too. A modern version...

They also make "all in one" numbers that have this material that is similar to styrofoam, but way more durable, that you can pull on and walk around in the ocean in areas where there are sea urchins. I had some of those and they saved mah feet!

And they have the kind where you can come home from work, kick off yer shoes, and put on your "house flip flops" (geta) too...
