TIME Person of the Year: Barack Obama, Architect of the New America

In mid-December, as Obama settles into one of the Oval Office’s reupholstered chairs — brown leather instead of Bush’s blue and gold candy stripes — the validation of Election Day still hovers around him, suggesting that his second four years in office may turn out to be quite different from his first. Beyond the Oval Office, overwhelming challenges remain: deadlocked fiscal-cliff talks; a Federal Reserve that predicts years of high unemployment; and more unrest in places like Athens, Cairo and Damascus. But the President seems unbound and gives inklings of an ambition he has kept in check ever since he arrived at the White House to find a nation in crisis. He leans back, tea at his side, legs crossed, to explain what he thinks just happened. “It was easy to think that maybe 2008 was the anomaly,” he says. “And I think 2012 was an indication that, no, this is not an anomaly. We’ve gone through a very difficult time. The American people have rightly been frustrated at the pace of change, and the economy is still struggling, and this President we elected is imperfect. And yet despite all that, this is who we want to be.” He smiles. “That’s a good thing.”

4. I think it's a pic

that shows the gravity of our world.. and I actually like it.

Pete Souza: “The President works on his Newtown speech. Two days earlier, I photographed him when John Brennan first briefed him on the shootings. Throughout that day, he reacted as we all did, which people witnessed when he delivered his statement a few hours later. Before we headed to Newtown for the Sunday night vigil, he went to watch his daughter Sasha, 11, rehearse for her ballet performance in the Nutcracker. He was going to miss her performance that night because of the trip to Newtown. During breaks in the rehearsal, he worked on the speech. His expression in this photograph may be subtle to the viewer, but not to me. There is emotion and resolve etched on his face, and I know this was perhaps the toughest day of his Presidency.”

5. The gravity of our world..

The financial crisis of 2007–2008, also known as the global financial crisis and 2008 financial crisis, is considered by many economists to be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It resulted in the threat of total collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments, and downturns in stock markets around the world. In many areas, the housing market also suffered, resulting in evictions, foreclosures and prolonged unemployment. The crisis played a significant role in the failure of key businesses, declines in consumer wealth estimated in trillions of US dollars, and a downturn in economic activity leading to the 2008–2012 global recession and contributing to the European sovereign-debt crisis. The active phase of the crisis, which manifested as a liquidity crisis, can be dated from August 7, 2007 when BNP Paribas terminated withdrawals from three hedge funds citing "a complete evaporation of liquidity".

This is how his Presidency started. Worst financial crisis since the great depression in the 1930's!

Just look where we are now.We are in a better place than we were. Obama was able to accomplish this without one ounce of support from the GOP! Not one! Think where this economy would be today if One just One Gop'er Congressman or Senator stood up to help the American people! Just one!

So to the goddamn naysayers (and I speak not of just the jihads of the tea party or the fox news enthusiasts or the GOP as a whole, I speak to the DU members that rake this President over the coals on a daily basis)...when they scream and pull out their hair ...Stand up for your President. He can not do this alone.

I believe that if we are United, We will Stand...Divided we fall!

End of rant!
Sorry Cha...

He holds all our weight on his shoulders.

PS I like the pic too.

6. Exactly, she..

thank you for the excellent history lesson of how PBO's term started after 8 years of cheney-bush.

I appreciate your "rant".. I might add if all Dems had gotten out and voted in 2010 instead of staying home like they're threatening to do in 2014.. then Pres Obama might be talking to Nancy Pelosi now instead of boner.

7. sheshe2 - thanks for the rant!

It is good to be reminded now and then of what the President, and we, are up against. You're right, the Republicans have done nothing but try to obstruct every positive move this President has attempted. We need to try and give him a Democratic House in 2014. I am impressed with his accomplishments so far but with cooperation in Congress we will really be able to experience the changes this country needs so badly.

9. It is OUR time! - Love It!

Yes, it is OUR time! You're enthusiasm is very encouraging. We voted in 2008 and 2012 for hope and change. Let's make this a reality, please. Get out the vote! It is so important. Let's transform this country into we want and deserve. Let's elect LIBERAL Democrats who share the President's vision. Time is on our side and we are motivated!

10. My copy came in the mail today

I've read all the Obama parts so far. It's a keeper.

I actually like that cover photo -- it's nearly all black and silver, a rather unusual choice, and the President looks very somber.

I hope he and his family are enjoying long warm sunny days right now.
