...and put them on a shelf. Nullsoft did a pretty good job of updating/innovating for a while but apathy eventually turned into atrophy.

It's called K-Lite.

About the K-Lite Codec Pack

The K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of DirectShow filters, VFW/ACM codecs, and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your audio and movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even several less common formats.

See here for the overview.
http://codecguide.com/about_kl.htm

The basic K-lite package allows WMP to handle just about any Audio / Video formate you might come across. Their is an extended package and also an additional 64 Bit Codec set required by some games.
I would suggest starting with basic package and becoming a bit fimilar with it.
Also when installing use the advanced install. Although most defaults are what you want it will ask if you want to associate various A/V types with WMP. Say YES here.

You need no longer worry about Quicktime or what ever worms crawl out of that Apple player thing.
Good by Real player!
*.ogg ? Great! Be gone that clown hat VLC dingus.
Flash video ? No problem!
Handle DVDs without some oddball package? Sure it does.
Subtitles you can't get rid of? Part of the package has a tool that may fix that up for you.

This thing is darn good. My only caution is that even the basic version is BIG. As such it is a touch complex.

But I lost my love for it pretty quickly when Nullsoft was acquired by AOL.

VLC all the way, baby.

I thought I would mention foobar. I have crappy PC speakers so don't really listen to much music on PC but I find it gives a nicer tone to audio tracks than other media players.
