Please help me !!!!
My Avira free antivirus was not updating.
I manually deleted it and tried to reinstall it.
I have tried multiple times, but it keeps telling me I need to manually remove, or delete it before it can reinstall.
I have manually deleted and removed it.
It does not show up in my programs and the icons are also gone.
The only place it shows up is in the Windows Security System and it shows Avira is turned off.
It will not turn on, because I deleted it.
How do I get rid of it so I can reinstall it ?
I am as dumb as a rock when it comes to computers.
Please someone help me !!!!

(9,314 posts)a registry entry that needs to be deleted.
I would download CCleaner (free version) and run the registry cleaner.

(13,088 posts)I have CCleaner installed already.
I found it under my programs.
The only option available is to uninstall it.
I don't know how to make it run.
I don't have an icon to click on.
Don't laugh.
I told you I was dumb as a rock when it comes to computers.

(9,314 posts)click on the start button. In the box at the bottom of the menu that comes up type in CCleaner and click on the little magnifying glass or hit enter on your keyboard. It should come up for you. Before you do anything, right click on the CCleaner icon and either choose the pin to taskbar or pin to start menu menu options (click on the option) so that you can find it more easily in the future. You can then click on the icon and run the program.
I would never laugh. None of us pop out of the womb knowing this stuff.
If this doesn't work, please let me know.
I have had this computer for 5 years.
I did not know that I could just type in the name of the program at the start button.
That was awesome.
I found it.
It ran for about 40 minutes. It wasn't even 1% finished. I thought that was very odd.
I defrag everyday, sometimes twice.
I delete cookies everyday, sometimes twice.
I clean the disks everyday, sometimes twice.
I will run it when I am sleeping, or away from the computer.
I also typed Avira and tried deleting that program again.
It is listed 4 times.
I tried deleting it two separate ways, neither worked, but it kept coming up they no longer exist.
I would type in Avira and surprise, they were still listed.
I hope it will work after the CCleaner runs 100%.
Thank you so very very much for your help !!!!!!
Have a great evening.

(9,314 posts)I really think it is a registry entry.
And you are welcome.
I ran the registry cleaner using CCleaner.
When I type in Avira it is no longer found anywhere on my computer.
I tried to install Avira.
Same thing happened.
It tells me I have to remove it manually.
I don't know anything else to try.
Thanks for all your help.

(7,309 posts)Control + ALT + Delete and choose task manager.
Go to processes, and choose anything that looks like it is associated with Avera (it's a guessing game). Choose end process.
See if that helps.

(7,309 posts)... please don't run defrag (if Windows defrag) everyday. That's a good way to ruin a hard drive. Once a week should suffice.

(37,982 posts)untick the box that says: Wipe Free Space. That feature takes forever and isn't really necessary in regards to getting rid of registry problems. As for clearing out your registry, the Cleaner feature will help, but you also want to run the Registry tool. Tick all the boxes start the thing and when the scan is done, click Fix Issues.
As for future, complete, uninstalls, use the freeware version of Revo Uninstaller:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
Run Revo to uninstall and get rid of registry files and leftover junk. Then run the CCleaner Cleaner/Registry tools to make sure all is neat and tidy.

(7,222 posts)I'd find a Restore Point dated before you tried to uninstall Avira. This should return your computer to the state it was in before your problem began
Here's how to do it in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084
Here's how to do it in Windows 7: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/system-restore-windows-7.htm
If you're using a different operating system, it's easy to find specific instructions via Google by just searching for "restore point" plus your OS.
If you then still think you need to uninstall Avira, don't do it manually, use the proper method, either from within Windows itself or using Avira's own uninstall routine.
