I'm having an issue with my printer.

I see someone else down below had an issue with my brand of printer and a Windows 7 upgrade, as well, but my problem is a little different.

I recently upgraded to Windows 7. I have an HP Laserjet 1020. It had been working fine since the upgrade, but just recently I'm getting this error message about the print spooler. I went through all the troubleshooting business, restarting the print spooler, etc., but then when I went to print, I got a prompt about "scripts" and saying that there isn't a remote device. Whether I check "yes" or "no," it goes back to the deal about the print spooler. I checked all my connections, tried a different USB port, nothing seems to work. Last week when it was doing this, I was able to get it to work for a while, but now it's just dropping me out almost as soon as I restart it. The troubleshooting button says everything is working fine, but obviously it isn't.

Any ideas?

3. You may need to...

...delete and reinstall the printer software. Do you have the CD?

4. It's probably around here somewhere.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks. My guess is there are updates since I've had this printer for quite a while.

5. you might try turning off spooling.

In the printer properties, you should have a tab (maybe an "Advanced" tab) that gives you a choice of whether to print directly to the device, or to the spooler. Printing directly from your program will slow down your program and your printing process slightly, but for the most part, unless you're printing gigantic jobs, you won't notice a difference. See if you can do that, and let us know if it solves your problem.

6. Thank you.

I'm usually just printing out recipes or forms, nothing major these days. (Retirement rocks.)

8. I would try this idea first. :)

If not try the driver update suggestion, that Polly7 mentions.
Here's a link to the software:

10. I'll keep that in mind if it keeps kicking out.

For now, the easy fix seems to have done the trick.

7. I had a problem with my old printer and computer .. I remember seeing the spooler and remote device

messages. I needed to download and install a new driver for it. Something to do with 64 bit vs 32? It was a while ago and I'm not good with these things, I remember it was a lot of mucking around.
