3. Except the person who this laptop is for doesn't want Ubuntu

If it was mine I'd either downgrade to 7 or put Mint on it.

4. just curious

why wouldn't a person put a dual boot of linux (mint + cinnamon would be a great choice) with windows 8? The amount of hard drive space is trivial, it is a free download, what would be the reason not to?

I'm going by what the customer wants.

7. Technically from 8 to 7 is a downgrade. operationally it's a major improvement.

19. Upgrade? Downgrade? All in the eye of the beholder.

I call it an upgrade.

6. Try it for 2-weeks...

Once you get used to it, it not all that bad.
But the downside is that after you are used to it, when you get on a Win 7 box... you will be moving the mouse to access the Charms and hitting key combinations that don't do what you expect. In short, once you assimilate, you will look like a complete doofus, just like you do when you started using 8.

9. When it becomes a pain to change and tweak settings, it goes.

Same reason Vista and ME went.

24. I tried it for a month

I got used to it, but it's still a POS!
It's made for tablets and phones, NOT desktops!

I have been supporting about 2000 users for over 20 years, and I can confidently tell you that at LEAST 60% of them will NEVER get used to Windows 8. Heck, some of them barely can use XP.

16. Simple solution. Windows 7 Home Premium X64.

No fuss, no muss, no problemo. And works perfectly. AND, I don't have to remove all the crapware.

17. That's my suggestion. Upgrade to Windows 7.

Or if you're feeling adventurous, you could try a Linux distro such as Mint or Ubuntu.

20. Update: Got it working half-assed right.

Once you install Classic Shell, decrapify it, and tweak the settings it works fairly well.
The main problem is that it really doesn't want to make it easy for you to change any real settings.
I don't like it as well as 7 but it is a lot better than Vista
And that stupid Apps Store and all those apps are a pain both to uninstall and tweak.
