I *may* be in the market for a new laptop

if my BIL can't fix the power wire on my laptop, then I need to get a new laptop.

Right now, my eye is on a Toshiba C855 - costs $399.

Has Microsoft 8. That's going to be the very first thing to go.

Windows 7 will run fine on it.

1. I'm not sure...

...how you feel about refurbs but I used an HP 6910p for 3 years and I'd still have it if IT hadn't updated me as it was working fine. I plan to buy one from newegg this week with XP pro for $230. The only draw back is an 80 GB hdd which I don't care about as I use NAS at home. It's a sturdy business grade laptop that's not overly heavy.

Just a thought. Best of luck.

2. I prefer Toshiba.

My dad has a HP laptop, and it has caused nothing but problems for him.

I say nothing.. because he's too damn conservative for my tastes.

Toshibas has been really good to me.. so I dived into Craigslist, and found a couple of used Toshibas that are the same as my old laptop or better.

Unfortunately, my BIL is not able to fix my computer, so I'm on the market...

3. Have you checked Amazon for a new charger?

The model listed above (Toshiba C855) is only $3.99

Unless you really want a new laptop for the holidays, and the power cord is your excuse to get it.

4. It is the wire inside of the computer

that broke, not the power adapter.

5. If you post the make and model...

the DC Power jack for most laptops are even cheaper than the AC adapters.

http://www.laptopjacks.com/

is one place you can search for new parts.

6. Toshiba C655

And I am trying to get a similar one from Red Bank, NJ for $250 - slightly used. I'm considering making the 50 mile trip with my BIL (tolls covered by me) just to get it.

Maybe Sunday.

7. Amazon has a replacement part for $1.50

A screwdriver and some patience may save you the aggravation of the drive, 250 bucks and copying over all your software to a new device. Hope it all works out for you!
