Upgraded to Windows 10 - Wow! Great OS.
Not sure what all the fuss was about. I held off because I was concerned about the transition. It was seamless, and took about 10 minutes (I have an SSD with not much data on the drive).
Works beautifully. Super fast (especially coupled with the SSD). Aesthetically pleasing and very intuitive.
If anyone has any doubts or questions, I'm available to answer.
Cortana is pretty sharp, too.
Edit to add: My version came with Edge and IE 11 (I use Chrome, but was worried because I was working on a project that uses IE as an object). If Edge evolves to handle add-ons/extensions, that's a pretty good looking browser.

(34,057 posts)but am not using Edge because of the ads. It is like my phone now, too many ads to deal with. When Adblock or something else is available I will probably go to it, I did like a lot about it.

(7,309 posts)Don't quote me on that, though. I don't use Edge, but the little bit of time I did, I was quite fond of it. The only thing keeping me from making it the default is the lack of extension/add-on support. Once that comes about, I will really consider using it as my default. It's quicker than Chrome, and has a really nice feel and look to it. I am by no means a Microsoft fanboy, but I'm giving credit where credit is due.

(16,104 posts)and lost you tube videos on IE 11.
Tried some suggested fixes, didn't work, now using Chrome.
But I really like Explorer. Especially after the years!!! Things are different! Pages show different.
I want my IE!

That doesn't sound normal, does it? That videos don't play?

(16,104 posts)Now IE 11 gives error message on all you tube videos wherever they are - here at DU!
My 20-something daughter said "Screw it - just use Chrome" and walked away. My 20-something son muttered "Luddite" and walked away.
I emailed Microsoft Help - when I told them, my kids laughed for some reason...I don't know what that means, but no response from MS so far.
Windows 11 seems to have a lot more to synchronize?

(7,309 posts)I don't use IE as my default anyway - I use Chrome, so I'm not really concerned about it The only thing I need it for is I'm trying to use VBA to "scrape" the net to find current balance values for all of my credit card websites (building an automatic credit utilization tracker in Excel). By the way, if anyone knows how to use HTML elements with VBA, I'm interested. I've got it to work with Discover, but it took me a week to figure that out. Of course, the other websites have different HTML elements to code for, so I could use help with that.

However, there are some privacy issues.

(43,049 posts)and it's working great. Seems to have better memory management, but I'll still have to max out the desktop memory to get it to work right with four browsers and Thunderbird open.
It is a PITA to have to go into settings to change some defaults, and there are privacy issues, but nothing catastrophic that I know of.

(7,309 posts)Also, is yours a 64-bit system? I noticed that IE is 32-bit on my 64-bit OS. That might be an issue, though I'm not expert by any means.

(43,049 posts)Desktop processor is AMD A4-5300 6 gigs memory (4+2) I tried to add 8 gig to the 4 but couldn't get it to work even though HP swears it should.
I don't remember what's in the laptop and can't dig it out now.
I haven't used IE on 10 yet, but Edge works fine within its limits, and it's a minor pain to reset the default browser. I don't use Chrome, but have Edge, Firefox, Opera and Pale Moon open all the time, and with Thunderbird for mail that sucks up a lot of memory.

(2,805 posts)Rock solid reliable and everything available from the Start/Search box. I only tried Win 8/8.1 but didn't see any real benefit. I do think the underlying OS behind Win10 is just a little bit faster.

(37,456 posts)1- MS really needs to pay attention to the uproar over their privacy practices. You can turn almost all
of that stuff off except for aggregate technical telemetry data-gathering.
2- Edge crashes all the time on me. It does need addons and extensions too.
3- They need to give detailed verbiage when they do updates. This minimal cryptic style sucks.
There's a very long thread here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_security/why-so-many-people-hate-windows-10/ad4845af-9bae-4929-bc0d-c5c427fd3989
I'm not agreeing with all of that thread, just providing it for discussion.

(7,309 posts)Also, would you know why IE 11 is 32-bit? I just noticed that.
steve2470
(37,456 posts)I think IE11 is 32 bit for compatibility purposes with corporate websites. It's being left in Win10 for businesses to use, mainly, and for use with websites that demand IE, like Microsoft's own Update Catalog website.

(7,309 posts)I don't know why MS dropped the ball by not including extension/add-on support with Edge. Edge looks to be like it will be a pretty good browser. Do you have any thoughts on why they did that?
steve2470
(37,456 posts)My understanding is it will eventually include addons in 2016. My personal opinion is that MS released Win10 about six months too early. After another six months, many more bugs and issues could have been addressed, and Edge would probably have addon/extension support and be much more stable. It literally crashes to desktop practically every time I use it.
Fantastic Anarchist
(7,309 posts)... but if I was, I'd certainly wait until Edge was complete before rolling it out. That way as soon as everyone gets a taste of the product, and if they like, they make the switch.
In this case, everyone tries it, somewhat likes it except for the lack of extension/add-on support, so they go back to their favored browser, and now Edge is lost and forgotten. In my case, I like it, but I've literally opened it maybe 3 times. I went back to Chrome, made sure to mark it my default browser, and will probably never use Edge again - simply because of this oversight.
To me, that's a horrible business decision, but then again, I'm not CEO, so maybe they know something I don't.
By the way, I mentioned earlier that I'm trying to track current balance information from different credit card websites using Excel VBA. I've worked out only one site (Discover). I know nothing about HTML so, it took me about a week just to figure out Discover's tags/IDs. Would you happen to know how I can find out how track other credit card websites that use different tags?

(34,825 posts)I don't grant my login admin privileges on my system, which was causing issues with an app used to launch some modified racing simulators. It simply would not launch because of the prompt you receive when UAC (User account control) is set to level 2. After researching, my options were to lump it, or to disable UAC, which I elected to do. I then learned (through trial) that certain apps will not run when UAC is disabled, namely the Windows Media Player and whatever they call the new native Windows photo app. I was able to work around those limitations by installing VLC player, and configuring Windows to use the classic Fax and Photo Viewer. I like greater control of the Start menu, so I also installed Start10 and set up my Start menu to look like Windows 7. I have not experienced any driver issues thus far. All in all, I'm pretty satisfied. It's fast, and runs all my apps, including Grand Prix Legends, which was released in 1998!

(7,309 posts)Glad you still like the system, though.
I know I shouldn't, but I do run my account as an admin account. I do have firewalls and anti-virus set up, so I'm happy to be delusional about my security so I don't have to mess with all of that.
