It hasn't been updated in a long time but it still works for what it does. I still use it and I am on FF Nightly build.

2. Mozbackup works great.

I've used it to back up and transfer a Thunderbird email account with about 13,000 emails in it. Their cloud backup had 3 different ones 1 had most of the emails but not the address books, another had a few of the emails but all the address books, the third had parts the first two didn't. It took me about 4 hours to compile them into 1 full working account. Then I was able to backup the full profile, wipe the XP install and install 7, and restore the profile after installing Thunderbird. Had a very happy customer-he was panicking ecause he thought he had lost his address books.

I have backups of my Firefox, Thunderbird, and SeaMonkey profiles and it beats the hell out of recreating everything the hard way.

4. I think Mozilla is abandoning the json format for HTML.

You might want to move to that format because it is more compatible with other browsers. Mozbackup won't be able to use the HTML file but it is fairly simple to manually import it.

You could also try renaming your bookmarksbackup folder. Then restart FF and see if it creates a new json file that is up to date. (Mine seem to be recent including July).
