Videos that start on web pages really slow up my computer
I often have two or three tabs open as I jump around but when a video starts to play at a website of one open tab, then my 'puter often seizes up for a bit.
These are videos that start on their own without me clicking on them. Is there a way to prevent such? I don't have a problem when I have only one tab open but I often like to have a few open as I read a thread here then go to the other tabs to do some research or further reading on the subject being discussed on DU.

(34,135 posts)At one point I disabled Adobe Flash, but that just meant I couldn't play videos when I wanted to.
Mostly I'm replying so I can keep track of the thread and see what recommendations you get.

(27,509 posts)Firefox has "plugins.click_to_play" built in, google it.
There are a number of add-ons for getting rid of annoying junk on websites:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/
This add-on frees the memory from background tabs,
also stopping their scripts from running,
giving your foreground tab more memory and cpu;
the unloaded tabs are still there, but when you click on them they have to reload.
it's great if you have lots of tabs:
