Romney and the CIA's Mormon hiring prefernce...

Time Magazine, August 4, 1997, has an article titled "Kingdom Come" by David Van Biema (in fact, the entire magazine issue is about the Mormon Church, titled 'Mormons, Inc.: The secrets of America's most prosperous religion')

On page 52 I read, "The FBI and CIA, drawn by a seemingly incorruptible rectitude, have instituted Mormon-recruiting plans."

No offense to the seemingly incorruptible Mormons but if you get into the CIA you can bet some of your covert ops (domestic and foreign) are going to be 'dirty work'.

Which begs the question re Mitt Romney's candidacy. Will Mitt keep that hiring preference ? What is the current status of this preference and how long has it been in effect ? I understand Bush/Cheney and Republicans in general are at something like 90% favorable ratings in polls taken in this reddest of red states.

1. Mormons don't drink -- as a rule.

That's probably why they are preferred for positions that require them to be very alert and wary at all times.

However, I know Mormons who drink. I know Mormons who are emotionally unstable. And I know a Mormon who is an alcoholic.

So stereotypes are to be applied cautiously.

2. The Mormons have the same problems as everyone else.

Don't buy into the hype. The Mormons have just as many drunks, gamblers, addicts, adulterers, etc as the rest of society.

The just happen to have very good PR.

4. A reason for the hiring of Mormons in the CIA, FBI, and NSA.........

is their language skills, honed during their missionary work.

5. Being a Morman

I wish that in this century people would not judge a person by their religion. This is the same way people judged Kennedy when he ran because he was Catholic. I was raised that all religions have good in them, and I am a Morman. I was encouraged to go to church with my friends, I had free will to decide what path I wanted to take. It really makes me mad that people are so closed minded that they are not even willing to make an effort to listen to the person and not cloud their judgement with religion. All religions have good and bad, but please don't compare the Morman religion to a cult, that it is not. everyone has free will, I'm sure the opposition is going to try and find the most unhappy people they can to interview, just like anything else. Do your own research, if all else fails if you are religious get on your knees and pray and ask the Lord for answers, He nevers turns anyone away. I can tell you I have not been the best member of my church nor have I been the worst, but I can tell you nothing bad has happened to me and people are not following me around. The best man is running for President and that is Mitt Romney.

6. Church of the Latter day Yertle

hey, all -

my husband and I wrote this yesterday and are trying to get it around - feel free to send anywhere you want and hope you like it !

“Church of the Latter Day Yertle”
( by Kenny and Miriam Lerner, with apologies to Dr. Seuss !)

Two gentlemen glowed in the light of the flag
And said, “Just think of all we might have !

Romney and Ryan, oh marvelous we !
If elected, we’ll lay waste to all that we see!

We’re kings of the land, water, oceans, and air
We can drill, we can mine, we can frack everywhere

If you say that we lie then it’s not what we meant
everything’s right from the top one percent.

But we don’t own enough, that’s the trouble, you see !
We need to give more to people like we!

So give us your jobs and all your factories.
And we’ll set up business somewhere overseas!

A place with no health care, no rights and no pay,
No unions, no rules, and no EPA!

And then, since the prices they charge can’t be beat
It’s impossible for American shops to compete !

We saw ! We conquered ! We bought ! We came !
Now the only American business is Bain !”

“But that’s still not enough!” Mitt and Paul soon complained,
“We will banish entitlements ! Keep government contained !

Health care’s expensive, food stamps cost too much!
They all just want handouts! (Lower taxes for us !)

If Americans aren’t rich then blame THEM, sorry chaps
You should all just try harder and pull up those bootstraps !”

Then way down below they discerned a vague sound -
The murmurs of millions scared folks on the ground,

The ones on whose shoulders their platform did rest,
The ones earning poverty wages at best,

The ones Romney said didn’t need any help.
And Romney said, “Stuff it ! I built this myself !

Thank god for loose gun laws, if they threaten I’ll shoot!
Just a few less civilians - no one gives a hoot !”

99% grumbled and soon their ranks swelled
strategizing the way that these windbags be felled!

“What they say and they do seems deceitful and canned
For God’s sake, their idols are Reagan and Rand !

They make jokes about stalling demise of the earth
and ignore global warming, such a subject for mirth !

The ascent of these demagogues soon must be halted -
Their malicious agenda and plans not exalted.

Roll up your sleeves, time to work, so go do it !
Get ready to rumble, don’t give up and say, ”Screw it !!”

Our votes and our voices are not plain little things –
They’re the weapons we have to stave off future kings !”
