Banning the burka, privatising the BBC, bringing back smoking in private clubs, having a referendum to reverse the law on gay marriage, abolishing non-criminal complaints of sexual harassment, getting out of the EU, withdrawing from the European Convention of Human Rights, were not even half of the Alternative Queens Speech unveiled by the rebels on Monday. As the bills including the Bone favourite, redesignating the late August Bank Holiday as Margaret Thatcher Day have no chance for now of becoming law, Bone has usefully explained that they could instead help poor old David Cameron by forming a manifesto of proper Conservative policies.I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

(14,737 posts)That's the thing that gets me with a lot of right wing wish lists at the moment. Often the polcies espoused by the likes of UKIP have very little to do with the reality of what's actually happening in the world.
Still, if right wingers want to act like the far left by becoming obsessed with ideological purity to the detriment of all other matters then that's their problem. Just don't expect me to offer them any kind of support.

(4,972 posts)It's right that people should know that this is how a significant section of the Tory party thinks.
Shouldn't the replacement of the NHS by an American-style privatised healthcare system be in there, though? Or perhaps the Boneheads aren't ready to be quite THAT honest ....

This particular group of loonies seem to be obsessed with Bloody Foreigners, wanting to make life harder for asylum seekers, and generally finding any way to get at those, in and outside Britain, who have committed the cardinal sin of not being born in Britain, and no doubt preferably in England.
Some of their proposals would be easily subverted. If you make it the rule that everyone must serve the full sentence handed out by a judge, judges will just give shorter sentences. 'Margaret Thatcher Day' will be used by her enemies for grave-dancing parties.
But some of them are just utterly ridiculous. WHO seriously wants the country to spend gazillions on a referendum on same-sex marriage? Who wants the whole death penalty issue resurrected? And banning complaints of sexual harassment unless a crime is provable? A Sex Pests' Charter?
The only good thing about this bunch of MPs is that they don't seem (at least from this list of items) to be obsessed with punishing poor people, at least so long as the poor people in question are white and British. But then you could say the same of the BNP...
