New Year Honours List

Some MPs who serve for many years get the highest awards, and gold medallist too. In contrast, there's a lak of wards going to people who risk thir lives in fragile states (DFID) and military personnel only get the the middle to low ranking honours.

It's the political establishment's reward for good - and conventional (Yes, Tracey ) behaviour.

If they ever wanted it to be taken seriously, they'd begin by changing the name. When Mussolini started banging on about reviving the Roman Empire, the consensus was that he was a dangerous nut job. But we go on pretending twice a year that we still have one.

They are pointless even when you exclude the dodgy bussinesmen and time serving politicians who garner most of the top gongs. For example, many of the sportsmen already have gold medals for their performances in the Olympics. As these are only achieved for winning your events on merit they are far more meaningful than any Ruritanian honours award dished out by a royal committee.

I'd partly understand the issue. The fact is that isn't so.
