UK to rename part of Antarctica Queen Elizabeth Land
Part of Antarctica is to be renamed Queen Elizabeth Land in honour of the Queen, it was announced as she made an historic visit to Downing Street.
She is the first monarch since 1781 - during the US war of independence - to attend a cabinet meeting. > After leaving Downing Street she went with Foreign Secretary William Hague to the Foreign Office, where it was announced that the southern part of the British Antarctic Territory had been named. The territory, covering 169,000 sq miles - almost twice the size of the UK - was previously unnamed, the Foreign Office said. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20757382

1. Just the sort of cringe-makingly ingratiating kind of colonial throwback ...

.... I'd expect from these public school pricks.
I wonder if Her Maj was suitably impressed? The Skin |

... that she took the opportunity to give the current shower of sociopathic incompetents a damn good kicking ... (FWIW, I'm in favour of the land naming but I'd love it that she plant some of the Eton & Harrow pratts in return!) |

6. Argentina complains to UK over Queen Elizabeth Land 'imperialism'
|
Argentina has presented a formal note of protest to the UK ambassador over the naming of a large area of Antarctica as Queen Elizabeth Land.
The note handed over by the foreign ministry to John Freeman in Buenos Aires criticised the UK's "anachronistic imperialist ambitions that hark back to ancient practices". The newly named area has long been claimed by Argentina as its own, along with other contested areas in the south Atlantic including the Falkland Islands, which Argentina claims as Las Malvinas. The note expressed Argentina's "firmest rejection of the recently announced pretension of the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland of naming an area of the Argentine Antarctic sector". http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/dec/21/argentina-complains-queen-elizabeth-land |
