Wyoming legislature reaches budget deal

CHEYENNE – A group of lawmakers who were negotiating the state’s supplemental budget bill arrived at an agreement Friday morning that could cut $45 million from public education in the next two years.

The full Wyoming House and Senate will consider a deal Monday that would slash $25 million from public schools beginning July 1. Another $20 million would be reduced on July 1, 2018.

However, the education cuts in the budget accord are dependent on the defeat of other legislation that slashes education more severely.

And it’s unclear whether those school bills will fail.

The budget agreement concludes hours of back-and-forth negotiation between the House and Senate that began last week. Disagreement around the budget largely centered on education funding.
