Bill would allow Legislature to cut salaries for education employees across state
The Wyoming Legislature could cut the salaries of public school employees under a bill filed Wednesday.
Filed by Rep. David Miller, House Bill 223 would allow the Legislature to implement the salary cuts on every level of Wyoming public education, including the University of Wyoming, the state's seven community colleges and K-12 schools.
School districts receive state money in block grants that they can generally use as they see fit. As much as 85 percent of districts' funding is tied up in employee pay and human resources, including benefits.
If lawmakers played a role in dictating salaries, that would represent significant oversight of districts' autonomy of funding.
