Parks director Sue Black departs, says Abele fired her
What's going on here?? anyone really know??
Milwaukee County Parks Director Sue Black, who brought national honors to the county's park system, was fired Thursday by County Executive Chris Abele.
Black said she was stunned when told by Abele during a regular weekly meeting with him that "we are going in another direction. We are letting you go."
She said Abele wouldn't tell her why he didn't want her at the helm of the parks Department any longer.
"I said, 'Are you serious? I deserve better than this after 10 years,' " Black said in a phone interview. She said she was locked out of her office in Wauwatosa while she was at the courthouse meeting with Abele.
Abele put out a terse statement thanking her for her service and announcing a national search for a new parks leader. He called her "a strong steward for the Milwaukee County Parks System."
A spokesman for Abele declined to say whether Black had been fired. However, Supervisor Gerry Broderick, the chairman of the County Board's Parks Committee, said he learned that she had been fired, but didn't know the reason.
"If they have some cause, they haven't revealed it," Broderick said. "Short of a felony, this is the most foolish thing."
Broderick has been a strong supporter of Black's tenure as parks director. "Her personal integrity is beyond question," he said.
Broderick said he had supported Black for county executive after Gov. Scott Walker left the job in late 2010. Black, however, decided not to run.
By firing Black, Abele has "declared war," Broderick said.

1. Sue Black won national honor last year as Parks person of the year...
In April (?) there was a story that she declined consideration of a parks job in Chicago.
She was out as a lesbian, not sure that had anything to do with it. http://www.mkelgbthist.org/people/peo-b/black_sue.htm

7. And in it's own inimitable (back-handed, boot-lickin') way, the J-S agrees
Sue Black, the recently fired Milwaukee County parks director, was nearly canned by her former boss, now-Gov. Scott Walker.
In fact, the situation got so bad that Walker - then the county executive - had a resignation letter drafted for Black and kept in his office, according to several sources. A source who worked with Black said she wrote the signed resignation letter on parks department letterhead and then ordered the agency to change its stationery.
The letter would have allowed the county exec to dismiss the popular parks director quickly while giving the impression that Black initiated the move.
But it never came to that.
One former Walker aide said Black was very upset about the standing resignation letter.
Walker insisted on it, the source said, to give her an incentive to keep her focused on keeping the budget on track.
