At the conclusion of the WSDCC meeting the caucus will host a presentation by Darcy Burner. As you are probably aware, Burner has spent the last several years in DC working with the congressional progressive caucus. She has prepared a power point presentation on the failings of progressives--"what progressive are doing wrong and how to turn this around." I anticipate this will be from 5:30 to 6:30, however, exact timing will depend on the adjournment of the WSDCC meeting. Following the presentation people may wish to go over the Grove St. Brewhouse to socialize. Judith Shattuck, Chair Washington State Progressive Caucus reply to: judith_shattuck {at} hotmail.com |

9. PDC training at WSDCC in Shelton
|
You are currently RSVP'd to attend the PDC Training on January 29 in Shelton, WA from 9:00 to 12:30. We are near capacity for the training, so if you will be unable to attend, please let me know as soon as possible.
For those who will be attending (which I hope is most of you), there are a few details I want to share with you: 1) The room for the meeting has been changed from Squi-Aitl to T-Peeksin. This is a change from the schedule that was emailed out with the Second Call, but it is reflected in the schedule you will receive at the meeting. 2) Although it is not required that you be able to follow along with a computer, having a wireless-enabled laptop will help you get the most out of the training. If you have a wireless-enabled laptop, I suggest you bring it with you. If you do not own a laptop, or will be unable to bring one, send me an email by 10:00 am tomorrow, and I will try to bring one for you. We have a limited number of laptops available, so we will not be able to provide laptops for everyone if demand is too high. 3) You will be on your own for breakfast prior to the training, and lunch afterwards; the State Party will be providing coffee and water in the training room. If you have any question, please let me know. -- Greg Haffner Party Affairs Coordinator Washington State Democrats (206) 583-0664 |

13. Why Democrats Are Opposed to Charter Schools--forum in Shoreline 2/8
|
32nd District Democrats Program February 8, Wednesday 7pm Masonic Hall Shoreline, 753 N 185th St, Shoreline
Why Democrats Are Opposed to Charter Schools It would be hard not to notice the intense lobbying efforts to promote charter schools by Stand for Children, the League of Education Voters and, now, the Washington State PTA. Lining up against charter schools are the League of Women Voters, NAACP, the state teachers union (WEA) and most Democrats. Charter schools have been rejected by the voters three times, most recently in 2004, and both the State party platform and the King County platform affirm our opposition. Sarajane Siegfriedt, Chair of the King County Democrats Legislative Action Committee, recently traveled to Olympia in an ice storm to testify against the current bill, which is sponsored by Democrats. She will discuss: •What's behind the current push? •Who is using whom? •What's the truth about New Orleans charters? •Is this why we lost Race to the Top? •Would you want your kid to sign up for one? Let's follow the money. Of course, Q&A and lively discussion will ensue. Carin Chase| Chair 32nd District Democrats www.32democrats.org carin.chase {at} 32democrats.org |

Remember, every extra dollar you can afford will go to local Democratic candidates and causes. At last month’s West Seattle Democratic Women meeting, there was a very interesting presentation on growing membership. One of the first steps was diagramming relationships with community organizations. I’ve done a rough draft for EDC, and will present it after the health care slide show. Don’t forget to bring extra money—Bill will be selling the Kiwanis nuts again, and I’m sure Libby Carr will accept any additional orders for the Christmas story book (10% of proceeds to EDC). |

23. Evergreen Democratic Club presentation on Aikido, a non-violent martial art 5/8 in Burien
|
What: Evergreen Democratic Club presentation on Aikido, a non-violent martial art
When: May 8, 11:30am-1:00pm Where: Angelo’s Restaurant 601 S 153rd St Burien, WA Pam Cooper from Aikido of West Seattle, will give a presentation at the Evergreen Democratic Club on May 8th. Aikido is a modern nonviolent martial art, with movements based on the principle of non-resistance - when pushed turn, when pulled move in beside. We redirect, not add, force in Aikido. Aikido is a mental as well as physical discipline, a way of looking at life, understanding ourselves and our relationship to others. Whether doing techniques or dealing with emotional stress, the principle of harmony is applied. The techniques can be adapted for people of differing ages and physical abilities. One of Pam's students started studying Aikido at age 61 and earned a black belt at age 69. There is a great deal of stress involved in being politically active these days. Aikido could be a great way for us to take better care of ourselves in a wholistic sense. For information about membership and classes, see http://www.aikidows.com/ |

26. Young Democrats upcoming events
|
hatcom County Young Democrats and Western Washington University Democrats will be hosting Darcy Burner for a presentation on Power on May 10 in Western's Viking Union Building Room 567 at 7 pm.
The Western Washington University YDs are hosting several events, including a Power and Politics Presentation by Darcy Burner May 10th, a 1st CD candidate forum May 24th, and Congressman Larsen on campus on May 21st. In addition, they are getting a rental safety resolution through our Student Senate and through their AS Board. In April, the Young Democrats of Gonzaga University were able to participate and host many events. They participated in the annual April's Angels Service day where they helped refurbish St. Joseph's Family Center. A few members were also able to attend a dinner with Secretary of State Sam Reed and hear about the importance to get out the vote, especially for young people. That same week, they helped organize and participate in several LGBTQ week activities including holding a Gay Marriage forum, a Candle Light Vigil, and a Day of Silence for those bullied for their sexual orientation. In addition, YDG also hosted our end of the year Spring Gala at the Davenport Hotel. YDWA President Drew Pollom and Western WA Organizer Patrick Stickney were able to make it as well as many local Politicians with whom they've worked with throughout the year. Representative Andy Billig gave the keynote speech. Finally, this past week we were able to attend and help out at two kickoff events; the first for Rich Cowan, running for Congress in the 5th CD and the second for Denny Dellwo, running for 6th LD Representative. On April 22nd, the King County Young Democrats had their April general Membership meeting at the Newmark Tower. They had Gael Tarleton and Brett Phillips from the 36th and Steve Berquist from the 11th LD attending and discussed future campaign events. They also are setting a candidate forum for May for all of the competitive primaries in the county. |
